Hey York!
It's the Community Service Committee here to remind you that fall is here, meaning the York Scares Hunger Food Drive is right around the corner.
If you haven’t been at York before, or just need a refresher from years past, the York Scares Hunger Food Drive is an annual event we run in partnership with Colour Clash. All donations we collect are given to the Daily Bread Food Bank, a local food bank which supports members of our Toronto community who are suffering from food insecurity.
Despite what you may think, food insecurity is an incredibly large problem in our larger community. According to the City of Toronto, 1 in 5 households suffer from food insecurity. This is hundreds of thousands of people who are struggling to have enough food on their plates. According to CBC, in Canada nearly 6 million people suffered from food insecurity, including 1.4 million children in 2021. Food Banks Canada is now reporting a number closer to 7 million in 2022.
And the problem isn’t going away. As inflation rises, food is hit the hardest. Earlier this year, overall inflation rose to 6.8%, while food inflation rose to a staggering 9.7%, according to City News. For families and households working on a tight budget, this can be the difference between being able to eat three meals a day and going hungry.
So York, it's our time to step up and help out. We are asking you to bring in canned goods and non perishable foods from October 17th to 31st. Items should be deposited in your grade level box so that we can get them to those in need. Plus, in addition to helping those in need, whichever grade brings in the most items gets points attributed to them in Colour Clash, getting you closer to a grade wide prize! It’s a win, win!
So don’t forget to bring in your items starting October 17th!!!
