Hey York,
Did you know that we have a Student Affinity Group? Students support and validate each other as they share their experiences as a person of colour in our school and greater community in a confidential manner. A safe space to acknowledge and celebrate our diversity, the Student Affinity Group welcomes all people who identify as Black, Indigenous and/or a person of colour.
Statement From a Member:
“When I first went to a meeting I was unsure of what would happen and therefore a little scared to join. However, I quickly realized how important and enjoyable they are for me to participate in, especially for my own wellbeing and learning. Not only were my experiences and thoughts validated by others in the group, but we also had and continue to have discussions that spotlight the collective struggles we face as underrepresented members of our community. The conversations we have expand my ideas and allow me to reflect on what it means to be a person of colour in our society. The Student Affinity Group has given me a deeper sense of belonging at York, and I encourage all BIPOC students who are searching for that feeling to give our group a try!”
Please note this is ONLY for BIPOC students in grades 8-12. Meetings are always on Thursdays, Week A. Times vary depending if we are learning remotely or in person. Please email Ms. Gopal (sgopal@yorkschool.com) for more information as well as for the Google Meet link.
