I’m sure you’ve heard of the trolley problem; save one person or five. Now, there’s no right answer to the problem. Everyone has a different opinion and different reasoning for what is the right decision. One ‘solution’ is to not interfere with the scenario, allowing the five people to be run over by the trolley. Some people believe that they become at fault for the accident once they decide to involve themselves. Others might decide that it is morally right to save five people instead of one. Thought experiments such as this one allow us to explore morals and ethics, and challenge our critical thinking.
If you’ve ever been interested in philosophy, or just challenging your own opinions, philosophy club is a wonderful club to join! In this safe space, we discuss theories, philosophers, debate, and listen to lectures. Acquiring knowledge about philosophy allows one to understand more about the world we live in, and fosters curiosity about why we believe the things we do. We challenge each other to convince the others of their position, and have lots of interesting, thought provoking discussions with Mr. Elder! One recent discussion we had was about whether or not love could be considered to be real. To address this, we discussed definitions of real versus not real, and what love encompassed.
