Homework
Each school in Clay County shall develop policy and written procedures which will assure that homework is utilized to reinforce skills taught in the classroom and to strengthen the home-school bond.
Homework will be defined as an assignment completed outside of the regular classroom which is designed to promote approved curricular goals. The following restrictions will be adhered to in school policies:
K-5
At grade levels K-3 homework will not exceed 90 minutes per week* - with no more than 30 minutes* assigned on any given night.
At grade level 4 and 5 homework will not exceed 120 minutes* per week – with no more than 30 minutes* assigned on any given night.
Homework will not be assigned as a punishment or disciplinary measure.
Homework assignments must reinforce or extend concepts and skills previously introduced in the classroom.
Homework assignments will not be given on Friday nights.
Homework assignments will not be given on nights preceding holidays or vacations.
Written homework assignments must be checked for completion (or graded) and returned to students.
No more than 10% of any nine-week, semester, or final grade may be determined by homework assignments.

* Limitations refer to the amount of work which an average student can complete in the time span suggested by this policy.
** The school shall be responsible for establishing procedures which assure that total nightly assignments do not exceed one hour.
*** Students in accelerated classes may be given homework assignments of up to one hour per class. The school shall be responsible for establishing procedures which assure that total nightly assignments do not exceed reasonable limits.
