Alignment: Lawful Good
Real Name: Gheneris HalaSon Mar-Vell
Much of Mar-Vell's original life is unknown, even to himself. He knows that he is a Kree soldier carrying the rank of Pluskommander of the Kree Void fleet, analogous to the earthly rank of 'Captain.", imprisoned for some treasonous crime against the Empire, which he also cannot remember. Having essentially been condemned to death, he volunteered for the highly dangerous, highly experimental Sim-Dell Method, involving a wondrous device known as the Psyche-Magnitron, a process that would supposedly turn one of the Kree, (a race that is naturally resistant to the natural course of evolutionary advancement or major changes in genetic structure) into a truly photosynthetic organism – able to draw upon ambient and solar energy to achieve a variety of effects. Mar-Vell, to the amazement of all present (including his commanding officer Colonel Yon-Rogg) not only survived the lethal process, but gained all the hypothesized abilities and more. During this time, Mar-Vell was outfitted by the legendary Nega-Bands. These artifacts would not only enhance his abilities (by collecting and gathering ambient energy from his surroundings to feed into his cells) but also allow him to switch places with the owner of the second set of Nega-Bands, in this case, the Earthling Rick Jones.
Shortly after his empowerment, Mar-Vell found himself paraded before the people of Hala as a would-be savior, or a flag to parade around for their numerous military conquests, before being presented for inspection by the Kree Supreme Intelligence, who determined that the 'new weapon' would be sealed away in N-Space until such time that his true capabilities could be tested and put to proper use for the greater good of the Empire. Without objection, Mar-Vell was plunged through the portal to the N-Space, the so-called Nega-Zone, where he would remain until the second set of Nega-Bands found their way to an Earthling abductee of the Kree known as Rick Jones.
From there, numerous adventures and foes would be faced: An attack by a rogue Kree Sentry robot on the Los Diablos military base (where he would meet the likes of scientist Howard Stark, security officer Carol Danvers, Colonel Thadamus Thunderbolt Ross, and a young Bruce Banner), the thwarting of a pair of infiltrating Skrulls (Skragg and Kl'r), finally recovering his lost memories, mastering his powers, and confronting Yon-Rogg, his seditious commander, and ultimately battling the Mad Titan himself: Thanos of Titan, and saving the Earth in process, but only before succumbing to a world-killing 'Black-End' depopulation bomb, and apparently burning up in Earth's atmosphere.
As a Kree warrior, Mar-Vell was initially part of a highly regimented society where duty to the state and adherence to the law was ingrained into their consciousness, and worship of the Supreme Intelligence was strictly enforced. However, his experiences on Earth, his exposure to human values, and the recovery of his lost memories catalyzed a profound transformation in his understanding of his place in the universe, to carry the weight and fates of entire worlds on his shoulders. Mar-Vell came to realize that true justice transcended mere adherence to rules; it involved compassion, understanding, and the protection of all life, regardless of species or origin.
Despite his great power and capabilities, he is, most of all, humble, often offering counsel or quiet support to those he has befriended. He is never consciously condescending or arrogant. In fact, he is the opposite—full of empathy for the struggles of others, and deeply respectful of those who live with the burden of heroism and responsibility. His cosmic awareness enables him to discern the feelings and motivations of others after only a few moments of conversation, allowing him to almost effortlessly navigate negotiations and reconciliations with heroes and villains alike. In such instances, he speaks softly, often choosing his words carefully as though subconsciously selecting the perfect words to defuse a situation. His first action is never not to condemn but to show others, even enemies, a better path and to help allies realize the potential they have within themselves. Though deeply compassionate and unconsciously empathetic, even he finds himself surprised and outraged by the treachery and deceits that so many individuals and entities he encounters are capable of, and atrocities or casual violence may temporarily override this laurel branch approach, bringing out the old warrior within him, and he may consider taking a life in such instances.
Mar-Vell is someone who understands that power must be used with great care and that taking a life is not a triumph but a failure to find another way. Mar-Vell never kills, as he has become sickened with the casual attitude toward taking lives that the Kree military often adopts. He will use precisely the force necessary to overcome those who insist on using force as a weapon, and no more – to do otherwise is to become his enemy. This deep moral belief defines him, and he offers it as a guiding principle to all those encounters.
He has constant dreams about a woman that he remembers having feelings towards, but only knows her face and name ('Una'), and that something tragic happened to her.
Mar-Vell is Kree, of the so-called "Pink-Skins," as such, he is outwardly identical to a Caucasian human being, and would effortlessly pass as one on any street corner if he wore civilian clothes. His actual chronological age is unknown, as Kree ages more slowly than terrestrial humans, though he appears to be in his twenties or thirties with wavy hair and blue eyes. While initially having white hair, which gave him the initial impression of a more advanced age, his alteration during the Sim-Del method has resulted in golden blond hair and a physique that could be described as 'ideal.' While not apparent, he retains the Kree distinction of being denser and heavier than his appearance would otherwise indicate – a surprising 340 lbs on a 6'2 frame. His eyes are usually sharp and full of empathy and understanding with others, but they also seem distant, as though he has seen much but does not belong to the world or circumstances in which he all too often finds himself. His actions and demeanor exude quiet confidence, wisdom, and a stoic nobility, but there is always an unmistakable sadness present in his eyes.
His costume consists of a blue-and-red leotard, which initially appears to be ordinary cloth but is actually comprised of highly experimental nano-machinery designed to form a symbiotic relationship with the wearer, creating a self-contained and self-sustaining ecosystem designed to provide nutrients and fluids to his cells more efficiently than his body's natural processes. The suit may even possess rudimentary sapience and react to external stimuli as such. Of course, he possesses the iconic starburst symbol over his heart, the so-called Star of Hala, which noticeably glows in response to the use of his abilities. His belt buckle contains a communicator, spare nitrogen pills, and a tiny medical kit.
The twin Nega-Bands around his wrists command special attention: two sleek, metallic-golden wrist-bands that shimmer with latent power, crafted from otherworldly alloys, surfaces etched with subtle patterns that shift and flow like liquid mercury under a light source. Tiny conduits and embedded crystals at regular intervals pulse faintly, the only hint at the immense energies they are created to contain.
Powers and Abilities
, including superhuman strength, tremendous endurance, extreme durability, the ability to rapidly heal (from the few things that could harm him), as well as near-lightspeed flight, the projection of photonic blasts from his hands, and limited manipulation of the light spectrum to conceal his appearance or hide from sight. The process did not account for his already demonstrated so-called Awareness, an ability to perceive events microseconds into the future and be hyper-sensitive to one's surroundings, and why he has this separate ability is one of the many mysteries surrounding the man.
