Shardik, while originally appearing to be a massive bear, is actually a mechanical construct. At the time that he is encountered by the PCs, he is several thousand years old and dying. Driven insane by his illness, he attacks the PCs and they may be forced to kill him.
Shardik behaves very much like a normal bear who just happens to be part machine and eighty feet in height. He is as unpredictable as any bear; he may benignly ignore a party or hungrily maul them to death.
The cybernetic claws were once fitted with numerous ray and missile batteries. Despite his impressive arsenal of ranged weapons, Shardik enjoys close combat greatly, and is more inclined to engage his enemies in melee combat.
His remaining organic components are fully integrated with his cybernetic attachments, but after thousands of years its circuitry have begun to melt and its internal systems are malfunctioning. Left to his own, Shardik seems to favor two extremes. The cyborg tends to lean towards up close combat, reverting to the animal instincts of its replicated DNA sequences. He will make every effort to close with his enemy if left to his own devices. The other extreme Shardik tends to display is indulging in a brutal excess of destruction, firing all of his weaponry in a horrendous all-out barrage of laser beams and missiles.
