NPC Saint, Jacob The Deceiver

His name is both Jacob and also Israel, the father of many children, the progenitor of nations, the wellspring of tales, a man goaded by his wives, deceived by his sons, heartbroken by his daughter, the usurper of fortunes, his brother's, his father-in-law's, his neighbors', the clever, the cowardly, the undeniably fertile, the visionary and the liar, the Raven of the desert, the chosen trickster of God.

His story was like a soap opera, with tragic overtones and a darker, more daring range of events: rape, incest, murder. Jacob became Israel; his personality changed along with his name. His best- beloved Rachel died in childbirth. His twelve sons, of whom only Joseph appeared to have inherited the trickster gene, perpetrate d humorless betrayals and grim atrocities. His daughter's dishonor sparked a massacre, which destroyed the patriarch's reputation. Famine at last forced the household into Egypt, where initial good fortune set the scene for all that happened afterward.
