NPC, Anti-Monitor

Powers and Abilities:

    • Antimatter Manipulation: The Anti-Monitor is able to manipulate antimatter, they can simply manipulate antimatter energy, or even build objects, beings, or entire structures from it.

      • However, it is important to note that when matter and antimatter collide, they will both annihilate each other, making this a very dangerous power to both user and target. Because of this, it might take extreme force of will on the part of the user to stop this from happening, and essentially stabilize antimatter.

Personality:

Cruel, aloof, dispassionate and menacing under the best of circumstances. He is the epitome of cold-hardheartedness, almost to the point of being machine-like in nature. Except when he sees some potential gain from staying his hand, the Anti-Monitor is absolutely merciless. Talking to him is like talking to a computer program with an icy and edged personality. He seldom answers questions, ignores most insults, and brushes away or destroys who intrude with the casualness that a human might brush away an annoying insect. Cries for pity do not move him; neither do appeals to sentiment or human kindness, since he completely lacks both qualities. The only emotions he feels is a desire for power, anger and hatred when he is thwarted or harmed, and a cool sense of satisfaction when another universe is destroyed or obstacle overcome. His humor is limited to dry comments on the inherent inferiority of all other life. His understanding of others is limited to those who share his love of power, and how best to corrupt, lure and manipulate those individuals when he needs to. Consequentially, he finds the actions of those of good alignment, especially those willing to sacrifice themselves to save others to be completely baffling.

He tends to view most problems and situations in an intellectual manner, as opposed to a manner of life or death (largely because his immense power causes him to believe he can easily defeat anyone the old fashioned way if he chooses to). This leads him to underestimate his foes. If he is injured or his plans thwarted too many times, he will go berserk, and never stop until he is satisfied that his foe is dead.

The Anti-Monitor wants more power, so he can destroy even more of the positive matter universes, and gain even more power. He seeks to expand the boundaries of the Anti-Matter universe, and make it the only universe in existence so that nothing exists but it, with him as its sole ruler. When he goes about destroying a universe, he does so completely without anger or passion. If he feels anything, it is anticipation, but not an eager anticipation, but the mildly empty feeling that comes when a hungry man who hasn't eaten all morning feels towards an upcoming lunch break -- an important, but routine task.

He considers every other powerful individual and faction in the multiverse to be an obstacle to this goal and so destroys any one that he can when he encounters them. Naturally, the Anti-Monitor is not the forgiving sort. If anyone thwarts its plans, that person is marked for death, by the nastiest way Anti-Monitor can arrange. Death can be only be potentially averted, however, by submitting to the Anti-Monitor and letting oneself be broken into miserable slavery.

He cares nothing for the cultures, history, or technology of the countless universes he has destroyed. He does not see them in the same way a conqueror would. He does not hesitate or make preparations more than necessary when destroying a universe. Unless it is for some reason absolutely essential to his plans, he will not stop to loot a world of its treasures, collect its people as slaves, or make ultimatums to its governments. He unleashes his armies of shadow demons to subdue resistance, and then unleashes his anti-matter waves to destroy the universe as quickly as possible. If this strategy proves unfeasible, he may delay it just long enough to gather information on the obstacle to his plan or gather 'allies' to help him overcome the obstacle. If for whatever reason, the Anti-Monitor has to spare a particular world, he would reshape its governments and people into another replica of Qward, his “policy” would be to maximize human misery; like the Inner Party from Orwell’s 1984, his rule would be like a boot stamping on a human face, forever. Whatever governors he would appoint to rule the world on his behalf would be chosen from among the most wicked beings. Such satraps may be permitted any personal luxury or abuse of the subject population... but a satrap must fulfill any command the Anti-Monitor places upon them, no matter how unreasonable or impossible. Failure typically means death, unless a satrap can persuade the Anti-Monitor that someone else caused the failure (and even this does not work all the time).

The Anti-Monitor lacks the patience for devious scheming. If he requires something from an individual, he will quickly threaten or offer a promise such as ruler-ship of a world or a quick, merciful death in exchange for it. If the individual refuses, the Anti-Monitor simply takes the method of least effort in order to "persuade" him, whether it be a quick torture session or showing them an image of a future where they get everything they want. The Anti-Monitor is just as quick to break promises or betray anyone foolish enough to ally with him, if by doing so he feels he can gain something. He may increase a pawn's power or give away a powerful artifact, but never does so without an ulterior motive. If some charismatic individual proves him or herself useful (or entertaining) to the Anti-Monitor, he will occasionally keep such an individual as a slave indefinitely. Even then he will expect to see constant demonstrations of obedience or servility; kneeling and flattery never go amiss; any displeasing behavior is instantly punished. Once the Anti-Monitor is satisfied that the ally is truly his creature, he will mellow out and smile coldly at requests if they are carefully phrased. Being murderous in every situation is wasteful, and the one thing that the Anti-Monitor hates is wasting his energy, and a servile creature that is no threat to him is not worth destroying.

He does not desire subjects or worshipers with the exception of the Qwardians and other inhabitants of the Antimatter universe. The Anti-Monitor views them as his chosen people, and so are the only ones allowed to live and serve him. He wants to be the ruler of all that lives, but instead conquering new people and bringing them under his control, he would much rather just eliminate those beings that he doesn't control. Make no mistake, the Anti-Monitor cares nothing for them, seeing them only as a means to an end, and would sacrifice countless billions of them without hesitation. So long as enough remain alive to continue to serve him, he will continue to use them as his minions. He makes certain that all Qwardians know they serve him. Any who act rebellious in any way are killed without a second thought, and they live in constant abject terror of the Anti-Monitor's displeasure. They are all completely subject to his will, and may be changed, preserved or destroyed at the Anti-Monitor's whim.

Tactics:

If attacked on his fortress, the Anti-Monitor is fond of using his Alter Reality ability to animate the very rock to attacks, as per the 7th level Cleric spell Animate Rock, with the exception that he can create animated rock figures that have physical attributes of Greater Stone Golems and/or Gargoyle Golems, and have the ability of Fast Healing (recovering 5 hp every round) and shoot rays of negative energy as per the necromancy spell Dread Blast described in Lords of Darkness from their eyes. The Anti-Monitor may also use this ability to cause needle-sharp stalagmites to spring out of the ground and impale his enemies, or to have pillars of stone rise up beneath foes only to collapse and drop them from great heights.

If the Anti-Monitor should find himself weakened or depleted, he will use his Alter Reality ability to stimulate the effects of Steal Life as per the 8th level Necromancy spell, with the exception that it drains every attribute equally from every person in the affected area for every round that passes. While the Anti-Monitor is doing this, he is vulnerable to attack and cannot defend himself. If he is attacked or distracted, he loses the acquired trait at the same rate he acquired it and cannot attempt it again until the attack ceases.

Science and Technology: Has access to highly advanced technology capable of shifting, merging, or destroying entire universes.

Base of Operations: The Anti-Monitor dwells within a floating stone fortress that is fifty miles long and more than twenty tall, floating in a poisonous band of glowing green gas. It had been carved whole out of Qward's sole moon. The castle walls are thick, dark gray stone, with jagged irregular surfaces. Each of the stones comprising the exterior walls are more than a hundred square feet and carved with hieroglyphics of unimaginable detail, each recounting the destruction of a different universe. Thousands of columns jut from every surface. The walls are carved as well, but into giant stone faces with red glowing eyes that stare into deepest space.

The interior of the fortress is something of a disappointment. Aside from a few special chambers such as the observation room and the torture chamber, the vast majority of the castle consists of seemingly endless stone courtyards, the smallest larger than any football field, labyrinthine corridors leading for miles in all directions, although it is still remarkably easy to find important locations.

While seemingly exposed to the void of space, once the characters are inside, they will experience normal gravity. The air, while musty and cold as a tomb, is still breathable. Lighting comes from no particular source, and is equal to that of twilight or early morning. There are still many areas of the castle that are left in shadow or darkness, where the Anti-Monitor or his minions may hide, watch, and occasionally last out at the unwary.

Neither the Anti-Monitor nor his minions have any need for creature comforts or entertainments, so most areas consist of bare stone that is occasionally interspersed with conduits of baffling technology. In a few of the courtyards, Qwardian slaves on hovering platforms are busily hammering and wielding together pieces of alien technology like worker ants in a frenzy.

It occupies no fixed location within the Anti-Matter universe; mostly the Anti-Monitor causes it to drift, but if he desires he can simply cause it to teleport to a desired location. If a particular world has attracted his interest, he will cause the fortress to orbit such an unfortunate planet.
