WHAT IS IT?
Elija Lutze, harbinger of the Volunteer Job Board
In November 2025 we initiated a series of information sessions in order to implement our shared objectives from the recent event at UAB, with the former dean of the Department of Translation and Interpretation, Olga Torres Hostench, who left us prematurely in July.
With the passage of time, our dismay at the unexpected loss has strengthened our resolve and, far from weakening us, has restored the enthusiasm she inspired in us, beginning with the first meetings, up to the suggestion that the authors of Multiple Versions Project be the subjects of future Final Papers for the degree of FTI.
Keeping in mind the objective she endorsed when she was with us, we wish to proceed step by step, beginning with the creation of this collaborative volunteer job board for UAB students, an objective that captured her attention from the start.
To whom is it addressed?
To students who would like to get started in professional translation, with the backing of their professors and professional translators in the Project.
2. For what sort of tasks?
a) Translation of the home page of the Multiple Versions Project website
Informational Objective:
to inform them about the space/time initiation of the project (Colloquium of the Hungarian Pen Club in Budapest, fall of 2012), explaining the collaborative workings and current projection with respect to the number of participants, their various professional trajectories and working languages.
Formative Objective: the task of translating (it) into and beyond the current languages of the Project, with the possibility of consulting existing versions, which would permit students to examine the variety of stylistic resources in the light of those used by professional translators who have accomplished works in various languages.
b) Translation of Multiple Versions authors' biographies.
Informational Objective: to learn the professional trajectories (works, disciplines, working languages...) and the life contexts of the current participants of the Project: authors and translators as well as creative contributors in other artistic disciplines.
Formative Objective: to translate, beyond existing versions, the great diversity of the biographies of authors and creators of the Project, as much for the sociological as for linguistic contexts, in order to situate students in a context of activating their communicative capacities in order to find solutions to challenges of transmitting with efficiency realities which differ in the two languages.
c) Drafting of the Project's new authors' biographies
Informational Objective: to learn the professional trajectories (works, disciplines, working languages...) of new participants who may not yet have a web page created, based on information already in the web.
Formative Objective: to draft biographies based on information in the web, following the established base model, to allow students to acquire fluency in the writing of a typology of text with multiple variants commonly used in academic and editorial contexts.
3. Recognizing completed tasks.
Completed tasks by each student, once evaluated by an appropriate corrector assigned in each case, will be posted an the UAB webpage, followed by the name of the student in question, with the objective of displaying her/his competence as a translator.
These works will also appear on the page of each participant, within their respective biographies in the section "Works done for the PVM," using the link to allow their consultation in future remunerated professional projects.
