The special olympics took place May 2nd, 2024. It was at stocker stadium. The events started at 9:00 in the morning. It was only elementary kids that competed in it. All of the grades had practiced at some point throughout the week. In the event it is mainly just track and field with a few other fun activities. There are kids from other schools competing as well. A bunch of the Fruita football players helped out with it as well as three freshmen in Miles Mason, Nate Wilkinson, and Weston Sharpe. I talked to some of the students who competed to see how they did.
One of the students competing is Eli, a third grader who attends Monument ridge. He ran lots of races. Eli said “It was really fun and I was the fastest third grader.” Eli won all of his races as well as taking second place in a few other events. He had a great time and was one of the fastest runners out there.
Instead of interviewing someone who is competing I decided to interview one of the Fruita football players that was helping out. So I talked to 9th grader Nate Wilkinson to see if he had a good time at the event. Nate said “It was really fun and I would do it again. I also loved the kid that I worked with because he was really funny.” Nate was assigned one of the students that was competing. He practiced with him and helped him out.
As you can see from all of the responses the Special Olympics was a great time and every one had a blast. Eli did great there as a 3rd grader and Nate was helping out a lot with setting things up as well as helping out the student he was in charge of. I would definitely recommend going there next year and helping out or even just to watch.
