Dress Code
Elyce West
The dress code for Fruita 8/9 prohibits exposed undergarments, transparent clothing, and off-the-shoulder, strapless, or spaghetti-strap tops. Cut tops that show cleavage, short mini-skirts, and shorts are also prohibited.
In my opinion, the school's dress code should be equally strict for both genders to avoid gender discrimination. Currently, the dress code for girls is more restrictive than for boys, which is unfair.
To ensure that the dress code is fair, girls who fail to comply with the dress code should be subjected to the same consequences as boys.
This means that if they violate the dress code, they should receive a lunch detention. If they continue to violate the rules and receive multiple lunch detentions, they should face more severe disciplinary action, such as in-school suspension or out-of-school suspension.
Recently, our school's dress code has become an issue because it has failed to keep up with the latest fashion trends. While the dress code has been effective in maintaining a suitable school environment in the past, it is now outdated.
For example, some girls wear tops that do not cover their midsection, which is not appropriate for an educational setting. Such clothing is too revealing and can be distracting to other students.
It is also concerning that some teachers only appear to be targeting specific girls when enforcing the dress code. This is unacceptable, as it creates an unequal and unfair learning environment.
Wearing clothing that displays phrases such as "I Heart Hot Moms" and "I Heart Hot Dads" is inappropriate. While it may seem harmless and funny to some of us 13-15-year-olds, it can be offensive and disrespectful to others.
As young adults, we must be considerate and respectful to everyone around us, regardless of their age or relationship status. Instead of rebelling against adults, let's aim to make good choices and set a positive example for ourselves and others.
