As everyone has come to understand, Daylight Savings Time is a bi-annual event in which the time increases or decreases by 1 hour. Just recently it has fallen back an hour and ever since, everyone has gained an extra hour of sleep. Ms. Lori said, “I could do without daylight savings time because it is hard on the animals, for instance when they want to eat they have to wait an hour because of the hour lost. I think we should just pick a time and stick with it.”
Daylight Savings Time (DST) has been around since March 19th, 1918. Just last year Legislation was thinking about making daylight savings time permanent for 2023 but the act was not passed through all the way and has not become active yet. DST was first invented to “preserve daylight and provide standard time”
Today, less than 40% of the countries in the world still use DST today. Two main states that don’t participate in DST are Hawaii and Arizona. Hawaii won’t participate because of how close they are to the equator. Arizona won’t participate because of the amount of energy consumption there is when there is a change. Mr. Johnson, an art teacher at Fruita 8/9 says, “ I wouldn’t be against it. I personally don’t like how dark it gets, so it would be nice to have one permanent time.”
It is not decided on whether or not the U.S. is going to participate in DST but it has been talked about for about 48 years. Many states in the U.S. have been trying to stop participating in DST including Colorado. The U.S. tried to cancel DST twice before. Once during WW2 and once during the early 1970’s. This has not been permanent though.
