Why the Grading Policy is Unfair

By: Alize Martinez

I acknowledge the grading policy is unfair because I believe it is not fair how one assignment can bring your whole grade down and drop your average even though it is one individual assignment. When you turn stuff in late you shouldn’t get in trouble for it especially when you have a valid excuse. For example, if you have family issues or personal problems that you are dealing with at the moment.

I asked a student at school their opinion on the grading policy when they turn in late work, is it just as important as when it wasn't late? Should teachers take the work when it's late? Sophia Snyder, an 8th grader at Fruita 8/9 said,  “If you go to turn in an assignment late, and you have a good reason, it shouldn't affect your grade,” I agree with Sophia because I also feel like it is not fair to get in trouble for having late work if you have a good reason for why you were late. It is important to keep in  mind that we are all just human, we have issues inside and outside of school.

Mrs.White The mythology teacher and ELA teacher have answered the same questions she answered, “I feel I do not exactly follow the grading policy. I give my students a bunch of lee ways.” Mrs.White gives her students extra time because of special reasons. With those special reasons being too much work she said or family emergencies. I agree with her because not only do we high schoolers have a lot of work but we also do have our outs at home.

We then asked what her opinion on paper summative is, and what she believes should make students want to come to school. Mrs.White states, “I do a lot of hands on summative, so that could interfere with the interest so they get a good grade on the test.” I feel it's important to be interested in the class to get a good grade. If there is a boring class then you’re less likely to have fun.

With that being said, I think late work is such a big deal and shouldn't bring down your whole grade. I also think that it is important to have an interesting entertaining class.
