Why ELA Homework Should Not Be Assigned
Hannah Kiser
Many students complain about having ELA homework after school, on the weekends, or over summer break. Kids are mentally drained after school, and more times than others, don’t do their homework. “ELA homework is kind of unnecessary in my opinion. I know that I never want to do ELA after school, and It’s not very helpful.” Says Hannah Wooters.
I am aware that I am not an ELA teacher, but even so, I assert that ELA homework can be very detrimental to student’s mental health. ELA homework includes reading logs, reviews, research assignments, and essays. Now these types of assignments can be done in class, but assigning them for homework is just poor for the average student’s mental health.
One reason why I think ELA homework is bad for student’s mental health is that there’s no time for socializing and spending time with friends or family. Students complain all the time about not having any time anymore to do anything. Students already go through enough work in a day, ELA homework is just too much.”Why is homework detrimental to students? Others say homework adds to students' stress and takes time away from exercise or learning something new,” says, https://www.timeforkids.com/
“The less ELA homework, the more brain space,” says Siri Marquez. Kids are being overworked everyday just to come home to homework? This has to stop immediately. We need to realize that kids need breaks in between school and going home, homework is just not the solution. This just proves that ELA is quite the chore to students, which is bad for student’s mental health and should not be assigned.
