Whiteman Park Closing

By: Space Simm

Grand junction has quite a few parks but a big one that is quite known is Whiteman Park. Whitman park had quite a big homeless population. The park was closed on September 12th for it to then be able for people to then rent it for an event.

Quite a few people are very upset about this, one of the main reasons being the homeless that lived in Whiteman park had to move a block down to the next closest park. Manager Greg Caton was the one who was the brains of taking Whiteman park down. They spent around 26,000 dollars on the metal steels around the park.

“I am not fond of the closing of Whiteman park. Unless homeless people are in an immediate threat there is no other reason to do so.” Says June Barnett

The community of Grand Junction and Fruita seem very split about this. Some don’t mind the idea of the park closing down and the homeless having to move. Some people that work at the hospital are glad that it closed. They don’t have to deal with homeless people coming in for showers and coming in drunk or on drugs. Others are quite upset about this and won’t stand for the fact that this park was a living space for the homeless for them to sleep and have at least somewhere to call home.

“I don’t think closing Whiteman park is a good idea. The park had become a place where the homeless could live and when they closed it down they took their place where they were staying away.” says Addison Murphy

This has become a breaking point for the people of Grand Junction and Fruita the opinions of both seem equally divided and looks like both sides aren't going to move from their opinion. So what’s your opinion on this?
