Teacher hirings. A topic that not enough people talk about except maybe the students. Should teacher hiring be affected by student’s opinions? Teachers shouldn't get hired if the student population doesn't like them. It will create a negative work environment and fewer kids would want to learn if it is by a teacher they do not like.
How will the students work with a teacher they like compared to if they hire someone the students will not like? As the main concern is getting work done, principals should take students into account when hiring someone. As of now, students are not allowed in the decision making. What are the students going to think? According to freshman Rylan Catt, “ The kids will cooperate better if they like the teacher.”
If students don't like a certain teacher, it is less likely that they are going to work well together in that environment, which equals less working time. When interviewed, Mrs. Lacount, a teacher at Fruita 8/9, said, “ I do think they should be, I think that the only reason teachers exist is to meet the needs of kids, which is why I am the way I am,”. She emphasizes the fact that students already like her due to how well she is able to connect with them.
According to the CDE (Colorado Department of Education), teacher evaluations for Colorado, a teacher's job includes keeping students safe and protecting their well being. Isn’t part of our wellbeing being loved by our teacher’s? Therefore, we should have a say.
