Before I got into this article, I had mixed feelings about people decorating Christmas before Thanksgiving, but now that I have thought about it I think that it is not right to have Christmas decorations up before anyone celebrates Thanksgiving.
Most of the time my family will decorate Christmas before Thanksgiving and I didn’t mind it, because I was just excited about the holidays but this year when we do that I’m going to think that it’s just not right. “It’s really up to the person,” Mrs. Lori, a teacher at Fruita 8/9 said. I also found out that a lot of people think that it is okay to decorate Christmas before they celebrate Thanksgiving, I find that somewhat ironic considering that only 20.5% of the U.S. population decorates before Thanksgiving.
In addition, my own TikTok For You Page is full of people already celebrating Christmas and this was the day after Halloween. Some kids have even been talking about Christmas and listening to Christmas music from time to time already. I understand if people have to start making or ordering Christmas presents for friends or loved ones but why do people have to decorate everything the millisecond that Halloween is over?
Disney+ has also had a little Halloween section, but the next day it was showing a Christmas section. Like, where are the fall movies? Is everyone just forgetting that Thanksgiving is even a holiday? I get that everyone will see this closer to Christmas and Thanksgiving will be over but I mean, are we only celebrating Thanksgiving for the food and nothing else? Don’t get me wrong, I love the food for Thanksgiving but we shouldn’t just celebrate it for the food only. We should celebrate Thanksgiving just like any holiday because you can spend time with family and friends. The first Thanksgiving was about marking a successful harvest between Native Americans and English people.
I have a neighbor who had Halloween decorations up still, then put an inflatable turkey up. I happened to look into the window and saw a fully decorated Christmas tree with other decorations all around the room. That was honestly the weirdest thing that I have ever seen from a neighbor but I mean good for him I guess. A family member of mine said, “ I used to think that people were idiots when they did that. But, it’s a lot of work to put up Christmas decorations just so you can leave them up for less than a month. So now I think why not get the most bang for your buck and put them up early? That way you can enjoy it for longer.” I get where he is going with that but just wait until like that day after Thanksgiving is all I'm asking.
If you get mad at what I wrote just understand where I’m coming from. Why can’t people just wait like one more week for Thanksgiving to be over before everyone starts decorating for Christmas? Just consider that question and then decide for yourself if you think that decorating before Thanksgiving is a good or a bad thing.
