The short form video app Tik Tok has been sued and they are being threatened with a shut down and ban off of the app store. Why? When the government tried to ban Tik Tok for the first time it was just Montana that ended up banning Tik Tok from all personal devices and the app store in November 2023. Montana was the first state to ban it. Will this Tik Tok ban end up banning it from the rest of the county?
Mrs. Weathers the computer science teacher’s opinion was, “The Tik Tok ban is not gonna happen, the US government knows too. They pulled a fast one on us. with the certain laws the Chinese government has, they won't have to sell Tik Tok.” I chose this because she knows what she is talking about, and she knows the law about banning an app, and if the government can do it this way or not.
So why are they trying to ban Tik Tok? In the case of TikTok, US legislators fear that ByteDance could be secretly controlled by the Chinese Communist Party. The company has denied the allegations that it shares sensitive user data with the Chinese government. The only fear is because of the threat that they are in fact sharing information that is illegal to share.
So pretty much, the Senate is trying to restrict Tik Tok from being downloaded and distributed to consumers in America. 9th grader Ethan Rollins says, “It's not getting banned, nuh uh. Instagram Reels is better, pretty disappointing, I have like 3,000 followers.”
