Here are the directions that we gave out in class:

Of Mice and Men Extension Narrative Writing Assignment

One writing task you will be asked to complete on this year’s Milestone EOC in American Literature is to write a narrative that either extends beyond the ending of the text you are given or changes the point-of-view. In this assignment, you are asked to do that with a scene from Of Mice and Men.

ASSIGNMENT: Throughout the novel, we see the events described by a third-person narrator that presents the story in a detached way, almost like an observer, giving very few glimpses into the thoughts of the characters beyond their dialogue.

Pick an important scene from the novel up to this points and change the point-of-view, presenting the events from the viewpoint of one of the characters involved in the scene.

Regardless of which character’s perspective you use, you should utilize narrative strategies such as:

    • Characterization (through physical description, dialogue, actions, reactions of other characters, etc.)

    • Dialogue between characters—remember to use quotation marks and to start a new paragraph each time the speaker changes.

    • Showing the action through vivid description of what characters do—don’t just tell what they do.

    • Describing the setting with imagery that puts the reader there.

This is due on _______________________________________. Please type your narrative if at all possible or handwrite it as neatly as possible. If you choose to type your paper, you can email it to me at michael.woodall@cobbk12.org if this is easier than printing it out.
