Am. Lit. for March 6-10

Post date: Mar 05, 2017 4:30:47 PM

Here's an overview of the coming week:

On Monday we will wrap up our reading, viewing, discussion and analysis of The Crucible. We'll also talk about the short answer and constructed response questions from our last assessment, focusing on how to effectively complete them for the Act 3 and 4 assessment.

Speaking of the assessment over acts 3 and 4 of The Crucible, that's what we will be doing on Tuesday. See the previous post on this page for more details about that.

On Wednesday we will start a new unit, focusing on effective argument and how writers and speakers use a variety of techniques to make their messages more persuasive. The literature focus for this unit will be works from the colonial/revolutionary era, as we look at how several writers from that era very effectively made their points.

As we begin this unit, we'll review the big three argumentative strategies: pathos, logos, and ethos. In case you are absent, here's a link to a video that does a great job of illustrating this via advertising: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FeCz5fy02JE

I'm attaching several other relevant document for this week, including Patrick Henry's speech to the Virginia Convention ("Give me liberty or give me death").

A dramatic reading by actor Orson Welles of Patrick Henry's speech:

We will also have new vocabulary this week, taking the words from Patrick Henry's speech. We will complete several activities before quizzing over them next Tuesday, March 14. I've attached this list below, as well as sentences with the words in context.
