American Literature for Jan. 5-8

Post date: Jan 05, 2016 2:10:8 AM

Here is a quick overview of what to expect in the first few days of the semester:

Tuesday, Jan. 5: We will start the semester by going over various procedures, policies, curriculum, etc. as we introduce ourselves and the class. We will also ask students to write a letter of introduction to help us get to know them better as the semester begins.

A common thread that we will return to over the semester is the idea of The American Dream and how it's reflected in the literature we read and discuss. By Thursday of this week, we will ask your to bring in an item that represents your goals, ambitions, and dreams.

Wednesday, Jan. 6: Students will complete a diagnostic assessment over various skills and knowledge related to our class. This, too, will allow us to get to know students better as we begin the class together. We will also work on an activity related to tone and identifying and describing the tone of a piece of writing.

Thursday, Jan. 7: Students will write about the item they have brought to represent their own dreams and goals, and they will be asked to share this with the class. We will display the items students have brought on the bulletin board. We will also finish up the tone activity we began the previous day and begin reading several Native American poems.

Friday, Jan. 8: We will finish our work with Native American poems from Thursday.

Vocabulary Books: Please plan on purchasing a vocabulary book for $12.00 by next week. If this is not practical, let me or Mrs. Thrash know, and we'll check out a book to you.
