CHARO SANTOS IS NOW ‘OSCARS’ FRONTRUNNER!

SEEN IN THE CITY:

(TORONTO, CANADA) – Her latest movie being bestowed the highest honor (Golden Lion Award aka Best Picture honor) in the 73rd Venice International Film Festival and being hailed as this year’s Oscars Best Actress frontrunner by critics, notably by Variety Magazine’s UK Chief Critic Guy Lodge, Charo Santos-Concio who is currently traveling and staying in Ontario for the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is overwhelmed by all the good developments, according to her good friend, now Canada-based Baby K. Jimenez, interviewed by the this Columnist via long distance phone call Tuesday morning.

Charo’s official statement, which she posted on Facebook on Tuesday, September 13, 2016 at 1:13AM reads: “Finally got to talk to my family this morning! My husband reminded me that God works in mysterious ways. When I accepted the project, my only motivation was to work with Lav DIAZ. I truly wanted to understand his cinema. He told me to just have fun! And oh! What great fun I'm having!

To Lav and his team, my costars, to Ronald and Cinema One, thank you for the honor of working with you. The film is a celebration of Philippine Cinema. And to everyone else who shares in my happiness ...THANK YOU! Maraming, maraming, maraming Salamat po sa inyong lahat!”

Baby narrated that when Charo saw her at ASAP New York in Brooklyn last Thursday, September 1, 2016, and Charo asked her to fly with her to Venice (Charo paid for her air, hotel and everything!) she immediately said yes, as Baby considers her to be “a jewel of a friend” and “gem of a person.”

Although, it was farthest on their minds that her movie, “Ang Babaeng Humayo” (filmed in only 12 days in her hometown in Mindoro, months after she retired as the President of ABS-CBN) will be received so well. The critics loved and adored her – calling her in heavily accented first name, they can’t believe she is so beautiful and charming in person, very different from her unglamorous role as a revengeful ex-convict in the movie.

The same reception was also experienced by Charo in the recent TIFF – as foreign critics mobbed her in every opportunity they see her.

According to online postings, a Venice film entry can only win one prize. Apparently, “Humayo” was heavily favored to win in four categories, namely, directing (Lav Diaz), actress (Charo Santos-Concio), actor (John Lloyd Cruz as a transvestite) and film. The judges in matter of minutes, decided to give their film the highest honor – Best Picture. No questions, no deliberations, so unlike during the previous years.

Buoyed by the Venice win and favorable critics reviews, already, talks are getting louder that Philippines should show the film commercially this September for it to qualify in the next Oscar awards. The Philippines has never won any Oscar award for Best Foreign Language Film, ever! Not even an acting award. Will “Humayo” and Charo be it? Stay tuned.

Congratulations to Charo and the “Humayo” team! Good luck on the Oscar quest!
