(PASADENA, CA) – For the very first time, Milpitas Mayor Jose ‘Joe’ Esteves will be riding the 127th Tournament of Roses Parade Float on January 1, 2016 held annually in Pasadena, CA and he can’t contain his excitement in sharing the good news to ‘Scenes In The City.’ His float will be the Marco Polo ‘East Meets West’ themed and is sponsored by Singpoli Corporation – the same group that won the Top 3 Awards given in 2014 and 2015 Tournament of Roses Parades!
How big is Tournament of Roses Parade? Per their website, each New Year's Day, the world focuses its attention on Pasadena, CA, home of the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl Game. It's a celebration more than a century old – a festival of flowers, music and sports unequaled anywhere else in the world. It's America's New Year Celebration, a greeting to the world on the first day of the year, and a salute to the community spirit and love of pageantry that have thrived in Pasadena for more than 100 years.
An event as large as the Tournament of Roses requires about 80,000 hours of combined manpower each year. That manpower is supplied by 935 members of the non-profit Tournament of Roses Association, a volunteer organization dedicated to presenting an internationally-recognized New Year’s celebration. Each volunteer is assigned to one of 31 committees, with responsibilities ranging from selecting parade participants to directing visitors on New Year's Day, to hosting the press headquarters for media coverage of the Rose Bowl Game, to giving presentations about the Tournament to community groups.
The Singpoli Corporation float in this year’s America’s New Year Celebration reportedly, will be made of at least 50,000 orchids and a variety of colorful flowers.
“I consider this trip and participation as joint effort by myself and Singpoli Corporation, in helping promote the City of Milpitas, especially in its rising economic development. My participation in Tournament of Roses Parade will help introduce the City of Milpitas to potential businesses, investors and guests. It is a great promotional opportunity for the benefit of the City of Milpitas. It is my and Singpoli Corporation's service and contribution to our City of Milpitas. Happy Holidays, everyone!” Mayor Esteves declares.
In addition to Singpoli Corporation, there are forty-three (43) floats approved and announced last month as participating in this year’s America’s Grandest New Year’s Day Celebration, and here’s a partial list: Disneyland Resort, Kaiser Permanente, Los Angeles Lakers, American Honda, Burbank Tournament of Roses Association, Cal Poly Universities, China Airlines, City of Los Angeles, Farmers Insurance Group, Kiehl's, Lions Clubs International, Northwestern Mutual, Public Broadcasting Service, South Dakota Department of Tourism, South Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association, Tournament of Roses 2016 Royal Court Float, Trader Joe's, Union Bank, American Heart Association, among others.
This year’s Tournament of Roses Float judges include Tom Bowling, Timothy Lindsay and Jodie Petersen. They will judge based on criteria such as creative design, floral craftsmanship, artistic merit, computerized animation, thematic interpretation, floral and color presentation and dramatic impact. Winning floats will be announced the morning of January 1, 2016, at Tournament House.
“These floral masterpieces are designed, built and decorated by dedicated teams who put incredible effort into perfecting their fantastic floats,” said Mike Matthiessen, President of The Tournament of Roses. “Our esteemed panel of judges will use their diverse backgrounds and talents to analyze each float and identify those elements that help us best celebrate the many ways in which we may find our adventure in the coming year.”
Experienced only in Pasadena, the magic of New Year’s Day in an unrivaled celebration, this year’s Tournament of Roses Parade theme is "Find Your Adventure." It’s shown LIVE, on TV on several network stations (ABC, KTLA 5, NBC, UNIVISION, Hallmark Channel, HGTV, just to name a few) all day, starting at 8:00AM PST.
