Twitter posts announcing Hollywood A-lister Taylor Launer as the newest "Global Benchsetter."

IT’S OFFICIAL:

TAYLOR LAUTNER

ENDORSES BENCH

SEEN IN THE CITY

(SAN FRANCISCO) – Jacob Black, I mean Taylor Lautner from the hit ‘Twilight’ movie series, is named Wednesday, June 19th, as the face behind the newest Bench teaser posters flooding the metropolis, in a media and bloggers conference held at Bonifacio Global City where they showed photos and the premiere of ‘Behind Every Scene’ Bench video. Twitter and Instagram posts and reposts quickly spread the news online (see accompanying photos).

When the announcement was made, the 21-year old Lautner is filming in New York City for his new movie, “Tracers,” an action thriller about a bike messenger wanted by the mafia. Although, he is expected to visit the Philippines to promote Bench in person in late August.

Noted Philippine Star Entertainment Columnist Ricky Lo first broke the exclusive news last Friday, June 14, that Lautner is it, but other sectors merely dismissed it as an "annoying free publicity stunt."

The deal was reportedly sealed about a month ago in Los Angeles. As a matter of fact, this Columnist spotted Bench Owner, Ben Chan and his entourage in Los Angeles after lunching at Max’s Restaurant.

Lautner follows the footsteps of Hollywood-based “Global Benchsetters” Jessica Sanchez of “American Idol Season 11,” Adam Levine (‘Maroon 5’ vocalist & ‘The Voice’ Coach), Liam Hemsworth (of “The Hunger Games” movie franchise), “Pretty Little Liars” star Lucy Hale, Joe Jonas of the Jonas Brothers, and Grammy-winning Singer/Songwriter Bruno Mars.

In addition, South Korean Superstar Lee Min Ho (of ‘Boys Over Flowers’ fame) is scheduled to visit the Philippines and appear LIVE at the Mall of Asia Arena, on Saturday, July 6th to promote Bench.

On the local front, Bench is one of the confirmed sponsors of the first-ever Binibining Pilipinas USA 2013 Beauty Pageant slated to be held on Saturday, July 27, 2013 @ 6:00PM at Centinela Valley Center for the Arts located at 14901 South Inglewood Avenue, Lawndale, CA 90260. Certified Beauty Queen Maker Jonas Gaffud of Mercator Model & Artist Management (he will coach/train the candidates) with his winning ward Venus Raj (she will host), Miss Universe 4th Runner Up are flying in and are expected to provide additional star power to the event. Tickets (priced at $50, $75, $100 & $150 VIP with After Party) are available now online www.EventBee.com.

The pageant organizers are still accepting contestant applications. For more information, please call

Star Cinema's initial movie offering for its 20th anniversary hits cinemas on June 26...

DIREK CATHY GETS EMOTIONAL WHILE FILMING "FOUR SISTERS AND A WEDDING"

Box-office director Cathy Garcia-Molina recently admitted that she got slightly emotional while doing Star Cinema's much awaited light family drama titled "Four Sisters And A Wedding" topbilled by five of the brightest stars of their generation--Bea Alonzo and Toni Gonzaga and Angel Locsin, Enchong Dee, Shaina Magdayao.

Direk Cathy shared that aside from the fact that "Four Sisters And A Wedding" is the initial offering of Star Cinema for the grand celebration of its 20th anniversary, the film is close to her heart as it is her first family film.

"First time kong lalabas sa genre na romance, there are bits of romantic slants per character pero it’s a multi-plot, multi-character story, that's why it’s so hard to weave them in together," said Direk Cathy, who, just like Star Cinema, celebrates her 20th year in ABS-CBN. "This movie is also very special because its story is something that touches my core, on something I never had. Maybe I want this movie because I don’t have this story in my life."

The well-acclaimed director further narrated that although she's part of a big family, she grew up alone. "I belong to a family of 9 and yet I grew up alone. I have sisters who are old enough to be my parents and I’m the youngest. So alam ko 'yung feeling na kapatid mo and yet parang 'di mo kapatid kasi they grew ahead of you. Hindi ko sila halos nakita dahil ako nasa probinsya habang sila nasa Maynila. It feels awkward everytime we see each other kasi kapatid nga kita pero bakit parang 'di kita ganun kakilala," she said.

Like Direk Cathy, CJ, the character of Enchong in the film, is also the youngest among his siblings. CJ shocked his four sisters--Teddie (Toni), Bobbie (Bea), Alex (Angel) and Gabbie (Shaina) that he will get married with Princess, her girlfriend for three months.

"After the announcement na magpapakasal si CJ, the four sisters will come together to stop the wedding. But it is in this coming together that they also face their issues among themselves as siblings and as a family," said Direk Cathy.

Aside from the beauty of the story, Direk Cathy took pride in the opportunity to work with some of the most talented stars in the country. "It was fun kasi marunong itong mga batang ito. I’ve worked with them on separate projects, I know what they can give, and yet I have my own needs based on the story. I am lucky enough that there are no instances ever that I can recall na may nagpa-star, na may nagreklamo," she shared. "This is not a romantic movie, hindi lang sila ang bida. So, I made sure that first, I instilled that they are smart enough to know, that this is not their project, it is a collaboration of efforts. Each of them is a pillar to create this entire film."

Coney Reyes, Angeline Quinto and Sam Milby have a special participation in "Four Sisters and A Wedding." Also part of the film are Carmi Martin, Buboy Garovillo, Bernard Palanca, and Janus del Prado.

An unforgettable light family drama about family relationships; siblings who have grown together and fell apart; and unconditional love; "Four Sisters and A Wedding" will hit cinemas nationwide on June 26, 2013.

World Premiere of ALL OF ME in Documentary Competition at Los Angeles Film Festival 2013

LAFF says it's "a startlingly intimate documentary that raises fascinating questions about obesity, identity and sexuality."

LOS ANGELES -- Last month, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie joined a growing list of national figures (ie. Al Roker, Rex Ryan) and even Hollywood celebrities (ie. Randy Jackson, Roseanne Barr, Sharon Osborne, Star Jones, Carnie Wilson and most recently Lisa Lampanelli) who have undertaken the life-changing process of weight-loss surgery.

A moving new documentary – to be screened for the first time next month at a major film festival in Los Angeles – humanizes a group of women grappling with obesity, body-image, friendships, relationships and eventually this process of surgery.

"All Of Me" from filmmaker Alexandra Lescaze will have its world premiere in the Documentary Competition at the Los Angeles Film Festival TOMORROW NIGHT (Saturday, June 15) at 7:50 PM at Regal Cinemas L.A. Live.

A Q&A with filmmaker Alexandra Lescaze and film subjects Dawn, Judy and Zsalynn will follow the screening. They will also participate in a Q&A following a second screening on Sunday afternoon.

Synopsis: The “Girls” have been friends—and morbidly obese—for years. Their bond goes deep and wide, literally and figuratively. They are smart, intuitive, complex, warm, and compelling and speak openly about their inner lives. The Girls met via the Austin chapter of the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance and partied together among Austin’s Big Beautiful Women community. Meanwhile they tried every diet and every pill. Now they’re going through the life-changing process of weight-loss surgery in an effort to lose hundreds of pounds. The experience presents a host of issues and consequences—some they knew they were in for, some they feared, and some they never could have imagined.

Please see the teaser/trailer on the film's official website: http://www.allofmemovie.com

LAFF Associate Programmer Jenn Wilson has a powerful video up on YouTube where she discusses why ALL OF ME is her Festival Pick. The festival staff write on YouTube that it's "a startlingly intimate documentary that raises fascinating questions about obesity, identity and sexuality."

About the Filmmaker:

Alexandra Lescaze, Director/Producer, is a NY-based documentary filmmaker and the Executive Director of the Sidney Hillman Foundation, home of the annual Hillman Prizes in Journalism and monthly Sidney Awards, honoring excellence in journalism in service of the common good. Her first film, Where Do You Stand? Stories From An American Mill, documented the 25-year effort of North Carolina textile workers to organize a union in the face of modernization and globalization. Her current film, All of Me, will air on PBS’ Independent Lens series during its 2013-2014 season.

Filmmaker Statement by Alexandra Lescaze: (Complete statement in press kit)

I started the journey of making All Of Me thinking about the experience of weight-loss surgery and wanting to know what it would be like to quickly – and almost magically – lose hundreds of pounds and live in a totally “new” body. But the more people I met and stories I heard, the more I learned about the real journey of weight loss surgery – the one beyond what can be marketed as a “quick fix.” The real journey is long, difficult, disorienting, and never-ending, even for those whose surgery is “successful.”

He returns home to his ranch on the reservation, only to find that his wife, Agnes, (Julia Jones) has left him. Worse, she's taken his beloved rifle. Virgil sets out to town find her— or perhaps just the gun— beginning a hi-line odyssey of inebriated and possibly imagined intrigues in town with the mysterious 'Airplane Man', (David Morse), a beautiful barmaid, and two dangerous Men in Suits. Are they real? Or spirits guiding him away from his true path? Virgil's quest brings him face-to-face with childhood memories of his beloved, lost brother Mose.

Twin directors Alex and Andrew Smith, in their first movie since The Slaughter Rule, have made a hauntingly beautiful film that is true to the lyrical and unflinching spirit of James Welch’s classic 1974 novel of Native American life.

Rachel, growing increasingly paranoid, starts to believe that there might be something seriously wrong with their unborn bundle of joy.

84 MINUTES / ENGLISH / NOT RATED

OPENS AUGUST 30

Throughout Richard Nixon’s presidency, three of his top White House aides documented their experiences with Super 8 home movie cameras. Young, idealistic and dedicated, they had no idea that a few years later they would all be at the center of a history-making impeachment scandal. This unique and personal visual record, created by H.R. “TWO: THE STORY OF ROMAN AND NYRO” TO HAVE LOS ANGELES PREMIERE AT 2013

OUTFEST

Documentary Feature Chronicles the First 10 Years of the Lives of the Twin Sons Born to Acclaimed Songwriter Desmond Child and His Lifelong Partner Curtis Shaw

(Los Angeles, CA)– One of the most eagerly awaited films of the year will be coming to Los Angeles. Directed by Heather Winters, TWO: THE STORY OF ROMAN AND NYRO, documents the 12-year journey of legendary songwriter Desmond Child and his lifelong partner Curtis Shaw, and the extraordinary way they met and connected with Angela Whittaker, the woman who would carry their twin sons, Roman and Nyro, into the world.

"Gay marriage opponents need to come up with a better argument than procreation,” states Child. “Gay people are NOT infertile... we actually can procreate... and our children deserve married parents. End of discussion, America.”

“We're just living our lives day by day, and we have the same ups and downs like any other family,” says Shaw. “Love is love.... and love makes a family. This is our story.”

From pre-conception through the boys’ first 10 years, TWO is the personal and powerful story of these unique individuals whose lives become inextricably woven together in magical and unexpected ways. TWO is testament to the universal power and ultimate triumph of love – that it is love that makes a family, affirming modern families may be modern in their making, but timelessly human at their core.

“This film couldn’t come at a more important moment in our nation’s history when hearts and minds are fractured and debate rages over equality,” says director Winters. “I’m honored that Desmond and Curtis entrusted me to tell the world their story and invited me into their lives in such an intimate and poignant way.”

The film is presented by Desmond Child’s film production arm, Deston Films and was produced by Desmond Child, Curtis Shaw Child and Heather Winters. For nearly three decades, songwriter and producer Desmond Child has reigned as one of music's most successful creative forces. His list of accolades includes Grammy awards, 70 Top 40 singles, and songs that have sold over 300 million albums worldwide.

Over the course of his career, Child has worked with international superstars including Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Ricky Martin, Cher, Katy Perry, Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood.

GIDEON'S ARMY, AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE

SYSTEM THROUGH THE EYES OF IDEALISTIC YOUNG

PUBLIC DEFENDERS IN THE SOUTH, DEBUTS JULY 1 ON HBO

--------

Documentary Won 2013 Sundance Editing Award

--------

In 1961, Clarence Earl Gideon was arrested for stealing soda and a few dollars from a pool hall. Unable to afford an attorney, he was convicted after representing himself at trial. Gideon appealed his conviction to the Supreme Court, which ruled unanimously that the right to counsel in a criminal case is fundamental to the American system of justice.

More than 12 million people are arrested in the United States each year. Fiftyyears after the landmark Gideon v. Wainwright case, most of them will be represented by one of the United States' 15,000 public defenders.

Directed by attorney Dawn Porter and winner of the 2013 Sundance Film Festival Editing Award for U.S. Documentary Competition, GIDEON'S ARMY follows a group of idealistic young public defenders in the Deep South, where lawyers face particularly difficult challenges due to high bonds, minimum mandatory sentencing and a culture that is traditionally "tough on crime." The thought-provoking film debutsMONDAY, JULY 1 (9:00-10:45 p.m. ET/PT), exclusively on HBO.

Other HBO playdates: July 1 (5:20 a.m.), 7 (1:05 p.m.), 9 (4:00 p.m., 12:15 a.m.), 13 (9:45 a.m.) and 19 (8:15 a.m.)

HBO2 playdate: July 3 (11:15 a.m., 8:00 p.m.)

HBO Documentary Films presents another weekly series this summer, debuting provocative new specials every Monday through August 12. Other July films include: "Gasland Part II" (July 8); "The Crash Reel" (July 15); "The Cheshire Murders" (July 24); and "First Comes Love" (July 29).

Brandy Alexander, Travis Williams and June Hardwick have dedicated themselves to defending those who otherwise would not receive representation, contending with a day-to-day life of low pay, long hours and staggering caseloads. Despite these obstacles, with the help of the Southern Public Defender Training Center (SPDTC), these young professionals are inspired to take on this unique challenge in the name of public service.

Travis Williams is a Gainesville, Ga. lawyer whose client, Branden Lee Mullin, has been accused of armed robbery and faces a minimum of ten years to a maximum of life in prison. Brandy Alexander has served as a public defender in both Georgia and Florida and is preparing to go to trial on behalf of her client, Demontes Regary Wright, a young man also charged with armed robbery.

The demands on these public defenders can be overwhelming: The average caseload for a public defender in Miami Dade County, Fla. is 500 felonies and 225 misdemeanors. Not surprisingly, many public defender offices across the nation have an incredibly high turnover rate. The pace is exhausting, and the legal wrangling intense, but these young public defenders persevere. Knowing the stakes are high - and their clients' lives will be deeply affected by what they do, or fail to do - they push themselves to the limit over and over again.

Does their work have to be this difficult? Experts cite the nation's approach to criminal justice to explain the dire state of indigent defense. In many southern states, bonds for misdemeanor crimes are exorbitantly high, as much as $40,000 for misdemeanor crimes like shoplifting, which most defendants cannot afford. This leads to a high rate of pretrial detention for indigent clients, with many serving months or even years in prison without a trial. Another factor is the rate of plea bargaining intended simply to end pretrial detention. Notes Brett Willis, a senior public defender featured in the film, "The reality is 90% or 95% of the people who get charged with something plead guilty...because the system is designed to force them to plead guilty and it punishes their failure to comply."

In addition to lengthy prison sentences, clients found guilty can face severe civil sanctions, which can result in such extreme punishments as: losing eligibility for public benefits, such as federal student loans; losing the ability to live in public housing with one's family; losing the right to vote; and, in some regions, losing the right to hold a driver's license, which can be a severe obstacle to finding post-incarceration employment.

Along with the perilous circumstances facing the accused, public defenders typically face a multitude of trying professional and personal circumstances, for which no amount of training can prepare them. Notes Travis Williams, "I have huge student loan debt. After I pay my student loans and my rent, all I have left is probably $300 a month to pay extra bills like gas and the car, all that kind of stuff, groceries. But I don't see how you can do this work for any period of time and not begin to love it. If you don't, then it'll just drive you insane."

These committed attorneys are backed by mentor Jonathan Rapping, the dynamic leader of the Atlanta-based Southern Public Defender Training Center (SPDTC), designed to fill a void in the training currently available to young public defenders. The center offers a comprehensive curriculum designed specifically for public defenders and geared toward the improvement of indigent defense representation and raising the standard of practice in jurisdictions nationwide. The group often provides emotional support, in addition to practical instruction, as the young public defenders talk about their work and empathize over similar situations.

As Rapping states in one of their seminars, "This will be a battle that will be won, and your children will look back on this struggle to save people from this unjust, cruel, inhumane criminal justice system. And you all will be the foot soldiers, you will be the ones who brought that about."

The U.S. incarcerates more citizens annually than any other industrialized nation. At the beginning of 2008, 2.3 million Americans were behind bars, followed by China with 1.5 million. Director Dawn Porter explains, "Americans are fascinated with crime, and yet few know the truth about how the criminal justice system really works. GIDEON'S ARMY presents a rare true look at the criminal justice system from the vantage point of the accused. I wanted to be sure the inspiring, challenging nature of the work these public defenders do, which involves a tremendous amount of personal sacrifice in service to our constitutional rights, was given the attention it deserved."

The film is produced in association with the Ford Foundation.
