Architectural Digest Features Pinay Lawyer Loida Lewis’s New York Apartment
American Express Ads Feature Pinoy Handbag & Shoe Designer, Rafe
I was browsing the newsstand headlines and publications one morning last week and what did I see – Pinay Lawyer Loida Nicolas Lewis’s apartment splashing the January, 2010 issue of Architectural Digest and a colorful American Express print ad in the San Francisco Chronicle (and other nationally-circulated newspapers) this time featuring Pinoy bag and shoe designer, Rafe Totengco.
Loida Nicolas Lewis is a Filipino-born, New York-based lawyer who gained prominence in the US mainstream business world when she took over her husband, Reginald Lewis’s leadership of their billion dollar-worth businesses. In addition, she authored an immigration book which became a bestseller, especially among Filipino immigrants. A University of the Philippines law graduate, she was the first Asian American to pass theAmerican Bar without having been educated in the United States .
I featured Rafe’s success story about two years ago here in my column. According to the American Express and Rafe’s website, Rafe Totengco was chosen by American Express for their “My Rewards Story” Contest. He is featured in a special advertising section of the May issue of Fortune Small Business magazine, sponsored by American Express. The campaign is designed to highlight select stories of business owners that use their Membership Rewards points to reinvest in their businesses. The six winners of the national campaign represent a variety of industries. Rafe Totengco is one of three that is being featured in a full page ad.
In addition, Rafe Totengco and images of his company will be featured over the next three years in various American Express marketing materials that are targeted toAmerican Express card members as well as small business owner prospects.
SEEN IN THE CITY
He is one of us – Ray Satorre, the Filipino-American Daly City resident, who is also the current California State Commissioner for Planning. Just last week, he expressed among his fellow Filipinos, his ardent desire and interest to run as a Council Member for the City of Daly City next election. According to Mr. Satorre, 57% of Daly City residents are Filipinos and we need representation direly in the Council to look after our needs and services.
Current City of Daly City Council Members are: Michael P. Guingona (term expiresNovember 2010), Carol L. Klatt (term expires November 2010), David J. Canepa (term expires November 2012), Maggie Gomez (term expires November 2010) and Gonzalo “Sal” Torres (term expires November 2012).
TO-BE-SEEN IN THE CITY
Everyone is excited. No less than the former US President George W. Bush, last seen publicly having a tete-a-tete with Top Rank CEO Bob Arum last weekend’s football game in Dallas , expressed his interest to watch today’s Top Boxer of the World, Pacquiao fight Joshua Clottey at Dallas Cowboys Stadium at Arlington , TX on March 13th.
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is beaming with ecstasy after reaching an agreement last Sunday with Arum on the fight.
Arum is super-excited on the new Dallas Cowboys Stadium which can seat up to 45,000 fans and more (perhaps imagining the dollar equivalent of those seats). As they say, ‘everything in Texas is big!’.
Both fighters (Pacquiao and Clottey) though, are still expected to sign formally the contract, still being drawn up by a Top Rank attorney, in the next few days.
My only question is… Da Who is Clottey? Joshua Clottey is a Welterweight boxer born in Ghana who now lives in Bronx , New York . Clottey rose to boxing fame by winning his first 20 fights, including 14 by knockout. He is known to be the last to fight Miguel Cotto(before Pacquiao) and almost beat him.
We have yet to get word from Pacquiao and his camp.
PERSONAL NOTES
Bon Voyage to Ms. Lora Nicolas Olaes who left Monday night for a short vacation toManila . She is the niece of Pinay Lawyer, Ms. Loida Nicolas Lewis. Ms. Olaes played the lead role, Kim in the Cameron-created musical play, Miss Saigon shown in Red Bank, NJ last November, 2009. Miss Saigon, the musical play, was billed as “Puccini's Madame Butterfly set in wartime Vietnam ”. It was from the same creators of Les Miserables. Originated in London , it played for more than 4,000 performances on Broadway.
Quote of the Week – “Manny accepted what was on the table and Mayweather rejected it. Haymon and Schaefer tried to convince Floyd all [Tuesday night] and [Wednesday] and he wouldn't agree to it. He didn't want the fight. He never wanted the fight. I always knew the fight wouldn't happen.” ~ Mega Promoter, Bob Arum on the death of the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight.
