La Aunor wins Critics Award in Venice

The One and Only Superstar Nora Aunor, with her legendary acting prowess, enthralled a powerful independent critics group at the recently concluded 69th Venice International Film Festival that they awarded her the Bisato d’Oro Award (represented by a symbolic golden eel sitting on a plate) from the Premio Della Critica Indipendiente.

She got the award on the eve of the festival’s awards night and for a moment she was touted to be the strongest contenter for The Volpi Cup, the Venice film fest’s best actress prize held on Saturday.

In her latest movie “Thy Womb” (Sinapupunan), La Aunor essayed the quiet role of a barren Badjao midwife who delivers babies on pregnant women, but ironically cannot give her husband her own child. The independent movie, shot for only 11 days, set among the colorful backdrop of Muslim Vintas and costumes, graphically interfacing onscreen against the floating community of almost extinct boat people, caught the elite attention of the festival goers right with its opening up to its closing – both featuring “live” birth scenes.

The movie’s director Brillante Mendoza accompanied La Aunor and other castmates Lovi Poe (she won the festival’s “Most Beautiful Gown”) and Mercedes Cabral.
