SOUTH BAY CELEBRATES FEAST OF SANTO NINO

SEEN IN THE CITY:

(SAN JOSE, CA) – The South Bay celebrated the Feast of Santo Nino last January 17th, 2016 participated in by the students from Bellarmine College Preparatory, Notre Dame High School and Presentation High School. The students put on a spectacular show at the Feast of Santo Niño Celebration sponsored by the Bellarmine Mothers’ Guild (BMG). The show was the culmination of several months of preparation and included Filipino folk and hip hop dances, Filipino musical selections showcasing student talent, a Tae Kwon Do demonstration, and a student-created video explaining the Santo Niño celebration and what it means to the students.

The Feast of Santo Nino celebration originated in April 15, 1521 when the Portuguese Explorer, Ferdinand Magellan planted Christianity in Cebu, Philippines by presenting an image of the child Jesus and baptized about 800 natives to the Roman Catholic faith. According to history, it was reported that the then Queen danced with joy bearing the image of child Jesus with the natives joining her – thus the first Sinulog in Cebu was born.

The Sinulog event reenacts the coming of the Spaniards and the presentation of the Santo Nino to the Queen – a popular theme among Sinulog dances in which the Queen blesses her people, by holding the Santo Nino while dancing. This is believed to drive away sickness, demons and evil spirits.

The Feast of Santo Nino is celebrated by Filipinos everywhere on the 3rd Sunday of the year. At Bellarmine, the festivities typically begin with a procession around the quad with Santo Niño, followed by mass in Leontyne Chapel. This year’s celebrant was Fr. Roide, S.J. with a heartfelt homily given by Mr. David Romero, S.J. Following the mass, a traditional Filipino lunch is served and then the fun begins with entertainment provided by the students.

The BMG hosts five events for the entire school community - students, parents, faculty, staff and friends - which reflect the broad ethnic and cultural diversity of our families: Diwali (Indian Festival of Lights), Virgin of Guadalupe Mass and Fiesta, Feast of Santo Niño, African American Event and Lunar New Year Celebration.

Wanted: President faces LP Presidentiable Mar Roxas

GMA News and Public Affairs’ election special Wanted: President continues to take a closer look at the candidates for presidency this Sunday as former DILG Secretary Mar Roxas accepts the challenge to face the country’s toughest job interview on January 31.

On Sunday, Roxas will face Mel Tiangco as the veteran broadcast journalist looks into the real story behind Roxas’ so-called publicity stunts such as directing traffic, driving a tricycle, and carrying sacks of rice. Tiangcoalso questions Roxas about the government’s slow response to aid the victims of super typhoon Yolanda and about the anomalies involving the MRT.

The Liberal Party standard-bearer will share his “master plan” in solving the country’s traffic crisis and will give his thoughts on controversial issues such as the Freedom of Information bill, the legalization of divorce, the restoration of death penalty, and the legality of same-sex marriage. Tiangco, on the other hand, will try to finally confirm whether or not Roxas is indeed short-tempered as his critics claim.

Wanted: President aims to go beyond the basic information about the presidential aspirants, providing voters the chance to better examine the presidentiables as they share their platforms and answer the controversies they are allegedly involved in.
