PACQUIAO WINS, RETIRES!

by Badford Adkins, MSCIS

(LAS VEGAS) – Manny Pacquiao did not disappoint 14,665 seated boxing fans as he beat Timothy Bradley in the old Pacquiao fashion – knocking him down twice (in rounds 7 and 9), outnumbering his opponent in total power punches (46% vs 40%) and garnering 116-110 scores in all of judges’ cards, sealing his legacy beautifully by a unanimous decision win last Saturday night, April 9, 2016 at the MGM Grand Arena.

And then, he declares his retirement officially from boxing during the very well-attended post-fight media conference (as a matter of fact, some fully credentialed press have to be denied admission due to overcrowding!) that same night he won.

“Yes, I am retiring. I have made my decision already. I am committed to my family. I need to serve my people,” the 37-year old Pacquaio announced, talking more like a loving husband and a father in the prescon than a seasoned boxer.

Pacquiao is the only living human being in the world, and in the universe rather, that has accumulated a total of eight (8) boxing division titles – Welterweight, Featherweight, Junior Welterweight, Junior Middleweight, Junior Featherweight, Lightweight, Flyweight and Junior Lightweight!

His wins are legendary and frequently rank high in boxing’s ‘Most lists: the fashion he shredded the matinee idol looks of Oscar Del La Hoya into almost unrecognizable manner; the manner he dropped the very physical Miguel Cotto in their 3rd and 4th rounds; the manner he dominated and dropped Marco Antonio Barrera in their 3rd and 11th rounds; the fashion he defeated the taller and heavier Antonio Margarito in Dallas Cowboy Stadium is unforgettable; the shocking manner he knocked out Ricky Hatton in Round 2 – in one big shot and even Hatton turned a retired alcoholic after that loss, as reports have it; and his win against Juan Manuel Marquez in their 2nd of four fights where he dropped Marquez in Round 3, among others.

Even Bradley was in great praise of Pacquiao after their 3rd fight saying “"I did everything I can. Manny was just Super Smart. He knew where I was gonna be at. He is the best fighter I have ever faced. He is explosive. He had a lot of experience. He has a lot of power. He has a lot of speed. Manny is smarter. He is a step ahead of me. Every now and then I will find a rhythm and I will lose my concentration. He was just always on top of me always a step ahead of me. He was very patient. He was waiting on me to make mistakes. I was trying to lure him in and then get out. But I wasn’t able to get into him. He will make a mistake and correct it really fast. He anticipated on me coming in and he countered! Manny is The Best Fighter I have faced in the ring!”

When asked if Manny Pacquiao should retire at this point, Bradley said, ‘NO.”

Pacquiao publicly invited Bradley to a Sunday prayer meeting inside the ring, immediately after their fight.

As far as Pacquiao retiring at this point, It was a graceful exit, really, as he is in top form. Well done, Pacquiao!

PACQUIAO TRIUMPHS AGAINST ALL ODDS

SEEN IN THE CITY:

(LAS VEGAS) – It was predicted that a storm will hit Las Vegas that fight weekend of Pacquiao-Bradley 3. The ticket sales were obviously hurt by Pacquiao’s LGBT remarks as MGM Grand Garden Arena is still almost half-full an hour before the main event – rather unusual for a Pacquiao fight in Vegas. The Grove Shopping Mall banned him from going there. HBO, the cable network, although broadcasting the event, condemned his anti-gay remarks. Nike dropped him as endorser immediately after his LGBT remarks were aired and became viral. He was attacked and meant to be harmed, by an unidentified (presumed LGBT) white male attacker outside a Los Angeles restaurant after dining with his beloved family. There were no Hollywood celebrities on sight at the VIP arrival gate. Pacquiao admitted during the final news conference three (3) days before the fight, as it was in his previous bouts, that he had a ‘dream’ about this fight (the outcome of which he never revealed even during the post-fight news conference). He previously said he dreamt about losing to Mayweather a month before it actually happened. Some of the sports writers are unanimously predicting a Bradley win, using data culled from their previous two fights. He just lost against Floyd Mayweather, Jr. to whom he also lost his former Strength and Conditioning Coach, Alex Ariza. This fight is against all odds for Pacquiao.

“It is very important to get the win for my country and the People in the Philippines. This is my last fight,” declares Manny Pacquiao, Forbes’ 2ndHighest Paid Athlete in the world in 2015, during the Pacquiao-Bradley 3 Final Media Conference held Wednesday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

And on Saturday night, as 14,665 people showed up for Pacquiao’s 66th and last fight, after 21 years in the sport, he delivered amazingly - as he favorably won unanimously against Bradley (116-110 on all judges’ score cards), giving him not only one but two career embarrassing knock downs in Rounds 7 and 9. Boxing fans cheered endlessly. And it doesn’t stop there.

On May 9, Pacquiao will step into another ring – a political ring this time as he runs for one of the 12 senatorial available seats in the Philippines. Yahoo Sports quoted Bradley as saying “I read something the other day where someone said Manny Pacquiao, in order to win his campaign, to do what he has to do, that he has to win this fight. I think this is baloney. I think that is garbage. I don’t think the fight has anything to do with what this man has shown for the Filipino people, where he’s from. To lose a fight or whatever happens and not get what is rightfully deserved, for him to win…If he hasn’t shown everybody what he is made of with everything he has done for the Philippines and the Filipino people. He is truly, truly to me the only one out there who is going to do right by the Filipino people. He’s shown over and over that he is for the people and by the people and that he’s a man of his word. He’s always shown that character and that integrity and I think he’s the right man for the job.”

Will this Bradley win affect his chances of winning the election also? Only time will tell.
