Enchong Dee, Erich Gonzales’s “Paano Ko Sasabihin” to screen in the US starting July 23

(Award-winning Cinema One Original Indie to be shown in LA & NJ)

Ever since they electrified TFC viewers with their chemistry as young teens in love in Katorse (Fourteen), Enchong Dee and Erich Gonzales have moved on to solidify their status as the on-screen couple to watch for, having been awarded recently as the Most Promising Loveteam of the Year at the 41st Entertainment Box Office Awards of the Philippines. The two teamed up anew in two other successful teleseryes: Tanging Yaman (The Only Treasure) and currently in the top-rated Magkaribal (Rivals).

After persistent clamoring from their fast-growing number of fans, Enchong and Erich finally bring their magical chemistry to the big screen in the latest film offering of ABS-CBN International’s Starry Starry Store, Paano Ko Sasabihin (How Do I Tell You), which will screen in select U.S. theaters starting July 23. This indie film won three awards in the 5th Cinema One Originals Digital Movie Festival in the Philippines , including Audience Choice Awards. Enchong’s performance here earned him a nomination as New Movie Actor of the Year at the 26th PMPC Star Awards for Movies 2010.

In Paano Ko Sasabihin, Erich plays Erhyl, a young TV soap writer who enjoys a daily guilty pleasure in her otherwise humdrum life: the chance to glance at her handsome co-commuter on the train from her home to work. There seems to be just one downside (or so she thinks): he is deaf. Fortunately for Erhyl, with a brother who is also unable to hear, she can communicate very well in sign language. To increase her chances of winning the guy’s attention and affection, she opts for deception and pretends to be deaf.

However, Mike (Enchong), the commuter Erhyl fancies and believes to be deaf, can actually hear and speak. He happens to be a teacher in a special school for the hearing and speech impaired. Believing that Erhyl is deprived of the sense of hearing, he also pretends to be one.

What happens to honest affection and fondness when it is tinged with misrepresentation? What becomes of romance when it is premised on deception? Can true love blossom in the face of pretension?

Paano Ko Sasabihin was written and directed by Richard Legaspi, a graduate of the Asian Film Academy in Pusan , South Korea . His films have been screened at the Pusan , Dubai , Pyongyang , Berlin , Vienna , Budapest , and many other festivals. What sets this film apart is not only the unique plotline or the addicting presence of Enchong and Erich in spite of having less spoken lines; it is also the cinematography of Ogi Sugatan whose expert use of luscious lighting transformed the mechanical, sometimes even dehumanizing, panorama of train stations and cramped cabins into places of romantic possibilities.

“We believe in the talents of our young Filipino actors like Enchong and Erich and independent filmmakers like Richard Legaspi. Thus, we make sure that Filipino moviegoers in the U.S. are also exposed to small but quality movies like Paano Ko Sasabihin so that they can appreciate the full breadth of cinematic genius that comes from our homeland,” said Kerwin Du, ABS-CBN International’s head of theatricals.

SEEN IN THE CITY

A Magical Los Gatos Wedding Reception

I was fortunate to have been given the privilege to witness a magical wedding reception in-the-making, attending the actual event and then being given permission to write about it.

Dr. Besosie ‘Bing’ Ganal, a Los Gatos-based Surgeon, has been a good friend for so many years. I went with him to Hawaii and substituted for his 2nd son’s (he got sick in the middle of the event) participation in Primrose and Walden Morta’s wedding.

Blessed with very healthy 3 boys, Bing raised them single-handedly during their late teen years (wife Gloria succumbed to cancer) and they all turned out to be their Daddy’s pride. His eldest, Edton, is now an Orthopedic Doctor for the US Navy and married with 2 children to Claire. JayVee, the 2nd one, a UC-Berkeley graduate is now a Los Angeles-based Residency Doctor of Anesthesiology.

And then there is the youngest – PeeJay who earned his Business Degree at the Loyola Marymount University in Southern California, who got married to Eli McIntyre in Vancouver recently. The couple met in Hawaii and fell in love quickly.

Bing stopped at nothing to make PeeJay’s wedding reception a huge success – even supervising the renovation of their mansion for months and redecorating it using their vast collection of antiques (already dusting in their garages) and newer set of furniture and fixtures bought all over the country.

A topnotch catering company (staffed with 17 people) was hired to serve endless flow of food and drinks from 6pm up to the wee hours of the following morning. The swimming pool was revived and adorned with floating floral candles to enhance the evening’s ambience. A white decorative drapery hanging by the raised patio just above the pool was unfurled to serve as the night’s projection screen that showed the couple’s growing up photos until their dating days. The bar was bottomless. A hired DJ played the dance music all night long.

Family and friends gathered all the way from Arizona , Los Angeles , San Diego, Boston , Hawaii , etc to witness PeeJay’s big night held at the Ganal’s hilltop-built bungalows clustering an Olympic-sized pool.

Asked how does he feel early morning after the night’s celebrations, PeeJay’s response was simple– “settled!”.

Thank you Dr. Besosie ‘Bing’ Ganal for inviting me to your very private moment in time and allowing me to photograph it.

My very personal congratulations, PeeJay (more thanks also, for allowing me to write about it) and Eli McIntyre!

PERSONAL NOTES

A huge ‘Thank You’ also to San Jose’s Nydia Manzano-Lim, a very good friend for many years, for being the catalyst to my attending the very private Ganal-McIntyre Wedding Reception last Saturday.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“Dream, Goal, Plan and Act. Dream first, and dream big. Then, set a goal that takes you forward towards your dream. Next, plan - decide what you will do and stop doing to make room for the "Do." And finally, deliver the plan with action.” – by Foton Motors’ Junny Borgonia of San Ramon, as posted on his FaceBook account, on achieving his and his wife’s ideal physical form (see photo).
