The Philippine film entry this year to The Oscars, "Transit" gets a boost from Hollywood.

Hollywood Producer Dean Devlin endorses "Transit." Photo from IMDB

HOLLYWOOD PRODUCER

ROOTS FOR “TRANSIT’

SEEN IN THE CITY

(HOLLYWOOD) – Spoken in three (3) languages, English, Hebrew and Tagalog - the nagging fear of deportation, the ill effects of migration to children, are the sensitive topics touched by “Transit.”

The Philippine entry this year at The Oscars for Best Foreign Language film category, “Transit,” produced by Paul Soriano gets a boost by being touted by film experts as the frontrunner in the Best Picture category, in the ongoing Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) in South Korea. Published reviews from The Daily Variety, The Hollywood Reporter and other industry publication are all endearingly raving.

And then there’s even a bigger boost last week in the film’s Oscar buzz, as the very influential Jewish Hollywood Producer Dean Devlin (think Will Smith’s “Independence Day,” and Mel Gibson’s “The Patriot” just to name a couple) openly expressed his support for the film – on Twitter. Twice already! On Wednesday, October 2, he tweeted “This is a film I’m enormously passionate about! I’m making it my personal mission to get this film seen around.” And then again this Monday, October 7, he tweeted “I’m so rooting for this movie!”

Born Jewish, Dean’s mother is a Filipina – the former Rita Hernandez of Manila (later known as the actress Pilar Seurat in the 60’s according to research). Aside from his big Hollywood movies, Dean was in the news before for openly defending the alcoholic Mel Gibson for his anti-Semitic statements. He was quoted as saying “the day this happened, my wife had gotten this long letter from Mel full of congratulations and talking about the joys of being a parent. She's Jewish. I'm Jewish. If Mel is an anti-Semite, then he spends a lot of time with us, which makes no sense. But he is an alcoholic and, while that makes no excuse for what he said, because there is no excuse, I believe it was the disease speaking, not the man.”

When “Transit” was first announced as the official Philippine selection to the Oscars this year, not a few raised doubts as to its competitiveness. The issue was the film’s low visibility as far as getting seen (the pivotal key to win) by the Oscar voters. As a matter of fact, as of this writing, I haven’t spoken to anyone who has actually seen the movie.

Well, things turned 360 degrees since then, as the tiny movie competes with 75 others, officially announced by The Academy last Monday via email blast to the media. They are:

Love Sees No End in GMA Pinoy TV's groundbreaking series Genesis

This October, Kapuso Primetime King Dingdong Dantes topbills Genesis, an original, groundbreaking series that will take the audience on an emotional and inspiring journey towards a new beginning. It gives a glimpse of the triumph of the human spirit despite the looming destruction - that when hope falters, love is the greatest refuge. Dingdong portrays the role of Isaak Macalintal a morally upright military detail entrusted with the welfare and safety of the Vice President, Edgardo Sebastian.

Kapuso leading lady Rhian Ramos will prove that love sees no end as she breathes life to Isaak's childhood sweetheart and fiancée Raquel, whom he will save and protect until the very end.

To show that in the midst of destruction, love is the greatest salvation, grand-slam best actress Ms. Lorna Tolentino plays the role of Sandra Sebastian-Trinidad, the principled president who will sacrifice anything for the sake of the country and its people just like her father, Edgardo.

Playing equally vital roles are versatile actor TJ Trinidad as Paolo de Guzman, the controlling and almost tyrannical husband of Raquel and seasoned actress Jackielou Blanco as Ramona Escalabre, the cruel, manipulative and dishonest former President.

Completing the powerhouse cast are Irma Adlawan as Tiya Fely, Raquel's auntie who plays a second mom to Raquel; Ronnie Henares as Emil Trinidad, Sandra's supportive and committed husband; Carlo Gonzalez asWaldo, the warden that will make Isaak's life miserable; Betong Sumaya as Tolits Dimagiba, an ex-convict who will be Isaak's friend; Luane Dy as Jill Galvez, a resilient, audacious and persistent journalist who will investigate everything about Operation: Genesis; Sasha Baldoza as Osie de Guzman, the smart, charming and loveable love child of Raquel and Isaak; Rainier Gison as MJ Trinidad, the eldest son of Sandra and Emil; and Annette Samin as Summer Trinidad the daughter of Sandra and Emil who has Down Syndrome.

Aside from the stellar ensemble, there will also be special participation of respected TV and movie stars: Robert Arevalo (as the Vice President and Sandra's father), Bembol Roco, Gardo Versoza, Snooky Serna, Shamaine Centenera, Mark Anthony Fernandez, Angel Aquino, Pauleen Luna, Lauren Young, Lito Legaspi and Laurice Guillen (as Isaak's parents) among others.

Under the helm of superb directors Bb. Joyce Bernal and Mark Reyes, Genesis is a journey that will showcase the basic goodness of mankind; that we are all capable of love, hope, faith, forgiveness and sacrifice. The show will draw viewers to believe that no matter what adversities that would come along the way, there is hope for the future and that love sees no end.

Don't miss the much awaited premiere of Genesis on October 15 on GMA's flagship international channel GMA Pinoy TV.

SYNOPSIS: From the 2011 overthrow of a 30-year dictator, through military rule, and culminating with the forced military removal of the Muslim Brotherhood president in the summer of 2013, we follow a group of Egyptian activists as they battle leaders and regimes, and risk their lives to build a new society of conscience.

The Egyptian Revolution has been an ongoing roller coaster. Through the news, we only get a glimpse of the bloodiest battle, an election, or a million-man march. At the beginning of August 2013, we witnessed the second president deposed within the space of three years.

THE SQUARE is a truly immersive experience, transporting the viewer deeply into the intense emotional drama and personal stories behind the news. It is the inspirational story of young people claiming their rights, struggling through multiple forces: from a brutal army dictatorship willing to crush protesters with military tanks, to a corrupt Muslim Brotherhood using mosques to manipulate voters. THE SQUARE continues to wow audiences and critics as the winner of the Sundance 2013 Audience Award and the Audience Award at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival.

As the revolution continues in Egypt and around the globe, the theatrical release of THE SQUARE is right on time to keep the dialogue going.

FILMMAKER JEHANE NOUJAIM and her producer Karim Amer are available for interviews upon request.

WHEN I WALK

WHEN I WALK is one man’s emotional and inspiring journey during six years of life following his multiple sclerosis diagnosis. For Jason DaSilva, life’s most challenging and joyous moments are yet to come.

OPENING FRIDAY, OCTOBER 25

IFC CENTER - NEW YORK CITY

OPENING FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 1

LAEMMLE MUSIC HALL - LOS ANGELES

“DaSilva’s strength and resilience, his determination to stay positive...shines through every frame of his story...It’s a lovely, inspiring film, deeply personal and honest.”

— Kim Voynar, Movie City News

“A powerful documentary about the failure of the human body and the triumph of the human spirit…This was the best doc at Sundance 2013.”

— Brian Tallerico, Hollywood Chicago

"When I Walk self-documents his entire journey with the crippling disease over the past 8 years in one of the most honest and sincere films ever to grace the Sundance silver screen...'We only live one life'–and When I Walk is definitely worth the short time we have."

— Esther Meroño, Slug Magazine

Synopsis: In 2006, 25-year-old Jason DaSilva was on vacation at the beach with family when, suddenly, he fell down. He couldn’t get back up. His legs had stopped working; his disease could no longer be ignored. Just a few months earlier doctors had told him that he had multiple sclerosis, which could lead to loss of vision and muscle control, as well as a myriad of other complications. Jason tried exercise to help cope, but the problem only worsened. After his dispiriting fall on the beach, he turned to his Mom, who reminded him that, despite his disease, he was still a fortunate kid who had the opportunity to pursue the things he loved most: art and filmmaking. Jason picked up the camera, turned it on his declining body, and set out on a worldwide journey in search of healing, self-discovery, and love.

An emotional documentary filled with unexpected moments of humor and joy, WHEN I WALK is a life-affirming film driven by a young man’s determination to survive—and to make sense of a devastating disease through the art of cinema.

About Filmmaker Jason DaSilva - Producer/Director

Director Jason DaSilva has been a prolific filmmaker for the past 10 years. He has directed four short films (OLIVIA’S PUZZLE, A SONG FOR DANIEL, TWINS OF MANKALA, and FIRST STEPS) and two feature-length documentary films (LEST WE FORGET and WHEN I WALK). Many of his films have won awards; OLIVIA’S PUZZLE premiered at the 2003 Sundance Festival and qualified for an Academy Award. Three of his films have had national broadcasts on PBS, HBO, and CBC. He also produced Shocking and Awful, a film installation on the anti-Iraq war movement, exhibited at the 2006 Whitney Biennial. Each one of these works advanced Jason’s objective to give voice to those on the periphery of society. "THE NEW BLACK" - A FILM BY YORUBA RICHEN

This moving and insightful film has sparked meaningful dialogue and audience raves on the film festival circuit. It was awarded the Audience Award at AFI DOCS; Audience Award at PHILLY Q FEST; and the Audience Award at FRAMELINE SAN FRANCISCO; and won Best Documentary at the URBANWORLD FILM FESTIVAL.

THE NEW BLACK addresses the issue of how the African American community is dealing with the gay community in light of the recent gay marriage movement and the fight over civil rights. It has been a discussion that has been coming for a long time in both of these communities. The film documents activists, families and clergy on both sides of the campaign to legalize gay marriage and examines homophobia in the black community’s institutional pillar—the black church and reveals the Christian right wing’s strategy of exploiting this phenomenon in order to pursue an anti-gay political agenda. THE NEW BLACK takes viewers into the pews and onto the streets and provides a seat at the kitchen table as it tells the story of the historic fight to win marriage equality in Maryland and charts the evolution of this divisive issue within the black community.

Your coverage, either feature or review, is greatly appreciated and your consideration for the your 2013 Top 10 List would be outstanding. Once you experience THE NEW BLACK - you will see what audiences have been talking about. SCREENERS AND ONLINE LINKS are available for your editorial review.

FILMMAKER YORUBA RICHEN and her producer YVONNE WELBON and subjects SHARON LETTMAN HICKS and KARESS TAYLOR-HUGHES are available for interviews upon request.
