‘FELIX MANALO’

TO SCREEN WIDELY IN US THEATERS STARTING OCT 30

SEEN IN THE CITY

(SAN FRANCISCO, CA) – Upon the personal invitation of LA-based PR Agent representing Viva Films, Jush Andowitt, this Columnist attended the Graded ‘A’ (the highest rating given to a film) by the Cinema Evaluation Board of the Philippines, Iglesia Ni Cristo-centric movie, Viva Films-produced “FELIX MANALO,” US premiere last Saturday, October 24, 2015 at UA StonesTown Twin Cinemas in the Bay Area. We also learned that the 2nd US premiere was held in New York on October 26, 2015. Meanwhile, in Manila where it was first shown at the 55,000 capacity Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan, it broke two Guinness world records for film attendance.

I am glad I went and watched - for I felt the movie enriched me spiritually, after learning the life and struggles of Felix Ysagun Manalo – The Founding Father of Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC). Reportedly, the movie’s script was written by the head of evangelism of the INC and the church approved of all content in the film.

The film boasts of about 100 Philippine celebrities in the cast headed by Kapuso Actor, Dennis Trillo who was very effective down to Manalo’s speaking manners and posture and Gabby Concepcion (who attended the San Francisco premiere). Per Wikipedia, the whole film was about 6 hours or 360 minutes in length but a shorter version of the film was used for its theatrical release. It used as extras, about 8,000 people and major scenes were shot in Metro Manila, Laguna, Subic and Bataan. It was a visual feast witnessing the birth of a religion in parallel with happenings in Philippine history. Only later did we learn that some scenes were recreated using Green-Screen or Chrome Keying technology – a laudable undertaking (I actually thought the period background were reconstructed from scratch!).

Kudos to the Director, Joel Lamangan, Armando Reyes, the Assistant Director and Glicerio Santos, the Creative Producer. The production design was done by Edgar Martin Littaua, Joel Marcelo Bilbao and Daniel Red. Other members of the production team were Bienvenido Santiago (story and screenplay), Rody Lacap (director of photography), Albert Michael Idioma (sound supervisor), Von de Guzman (musical director), John Wong (film editor), and Juvan Bermil (make-up and hair design).
