Greenfund Philippines claims bold mission to reform communities through ecotourism
ABS CBN Foundation International’s new program ties in environmental protection and ecotourism to alleviate poverty in the Philippines
Redwood City, Calif. (March 11, 2013) – Despite being home to lush islands and what the world regards as the ocean floors unmatched in biodiversity, the Philippines still finds itself struggling with poverty. The tackling of many social issues have been long-entrusted to ABS CBN Foundation International whose work in the fields of child care and disaster relief made it a global brand for philanthropy. Now expanding its public service, the nonprofit launches Greenfund Philippines, a 360°program that addresses livelihood, environmental protection, education, and sustainability. With a string of successes in pilot locations, it aims to replicate this treatment in multiple provinces and islands around the country.
By working towards a green economy to avert the worst consequences of global warming and the degradation of the ecological environment, Greenfund Philippines begins its noble endeavor.
“We began to pilot this program several years ago, trying to find a formula that works. We found that in order to provide the optimum environment for growth and wellness of the Filipino child, it was important to provide their families with a means of livelihood that did three things: become a sustainable source of income, utilize and protect our natural resources, and ultimately, restore dignity to the lives of the least among us,” said Gina Lopez, founder of ABS-CBN Foundation, Inc. in the Philippines, beneficiary to the United States-based organization. “The great news is that we found that formula. We will replicate this all over the country and leave no stone unturned.”
Some successful projects include the reforestation of the La Mesa Dam in Metropolitan Manila, which serves as the main water source for area. Today, it is a visitor’s haven for euphoric escape from urban living. In the southwest, Palawan, also known as the Philippines’ last frontier, boasts ofUgong Rock - an 18 million year old rock formation that is now a destination for spelunking and ziplining. Its Bacungan River, once at the hands of aggressive mangrove cutting now showcases a floating restaurant and river cruise that supports locals, who in turn, safeguard their river. Along a nearby river called Iwahig, families lived in unimaginable destitution until Greenfund Philippinesstepped in and helped them form a firefly watching spectacle, replete with paddleboats and visitor centers. This particular model was a breakthrough in ecotourism and earned it the gold award at the Pacific Asia Travel Awards in 2010.
“When I visited the projects in the Philippines, I saw more than hidden treasures of our country that all the world should see. I was amongst our countrymen who once lived in abject poverty and now, they held their heads up high with pride and dignity,” narrates Jo Ann Kyle, Managing Director for ABS CBN Foundation International. “We’ve seen what we can do on a smaller scale and the impact that it has on the economy, our people, and the environment. Our dream is bold – to alleviate poverty – but we will do it, one community at a time.”
Targeted upcoming projects include work in Sibuyan Island in the province of Romblon, tagged as the world’s densest forest and site of 34 discovered waterfalls.
The Filipino child remains at the core of ABS CBN Foundation International’s philanthropy. WithGreenfund Philippines, the service expands to ensure that not only will every child be afforded with an education and provided necessary social services, but that he has a dignified environment to live in. And by empowering local families to engage in a dynamic economy with an environmental consciousness, it guarantees a quality of life for generations to come. One community at a time.

Vic Sotto topbills new GMA Pinoy TV family sitcom Vampire ang Daddy Ko
Filipinos abroad can now see more of ace comedian and TV host Vic Sotto as he returns to doing family sitcoms via Vampire Ang Daddy Ko, premiering on Saturday, March 16 on GMA Pinoy TV.
This original family sitcom produced by GMA Network and MZet Productions also stars Oyo Sotto, Glaiza De Castro, Bea Binene, Derrick Monasterio, Jackie Lou Blanco and Ms. Pilita Corales.
Completing the star-studded cast are Jimmy Santos, Ryzza Mae Dizon, Anjo Yllana, Jin Ri Park, Jinky Oda, and Sef Cadayona.
Vampire ang Daddy Ko is a family sitcom written along the lines Okay Ka, Fairy Ko (OKFK). OKFK established its own mythology and its own set of rules. For instance, despite her powers to appear and disappear at will and erase the memory of others, Ina Magenta could not bring back the dead from the living. She was powerful, but she believed in God. Also, OKFK was a family show before anything else. It imparted wholesome family values without departing from being a situation-comedy. OKFK was a fight between good and evil but it did not aim to frighten, so that it could tap both young and old audiences.
Vampire ang Daddy Ko seeks to accomplish all that and more, using a faster pace of storytelling and modern post-production editing techniques. Not only will Vampire ang Daddy Ko remind Okay Ka, Fairy Ko fans of the same enchanting feeling that this popular show used to bring, it will also introduce young Filipinos abroad to this television format identified first and foremost with OKFK.
The story revolves around a family where the head is a vampire, and where love is the only thing that makes them survive everybody’s suspicion and their own paranoia. But more importantly, the story focuses on the love of a son for his father and vice-versa.
Vlad (Oyo) is a semi-retired vampire and the head of the family. He’s been making do with animal blood since he married a human, Sonya (Jackie Lou / Pilita). It is his great love for Sonya that made him want to reform. Sonya, in turn, has promised to give him fine and outstanding children, and she’s given him two sons, Vad and Victor (Vic).
Unlike his older brother, Victor is not a vampire. He has issues with his father. He knows his father is a vampire who, from time to time, still consorts with active vampires. Vic feels his father doesn’t love him as much as he does his missing older son, Vad. Vlad continues to tempt Victor with pig’s blood, measures his cuspids to see if they’ve grown into fangs, and in his presence keeps on asking his wife Sonya if it’s possible for them to have picked up the wrong baby in the hospital nursery.
Will the love between father and son outweigh their differences?
Written and directed by Ms. Bibeth Orteza, find out how Vlad and Sonya, together with the merry mix of characters of Small and Big, Bibo, Jinri, Omma, Stefani, Derry, Bebe, and Vavavoom will make Victor’s life a lot more interesting and exciting.
Don’t miss Vampire ang Daddy Ko as it premieres on March 16 and will air every Saturday on GMA’s flagship international channel, GMA Pinoy TV. BOOK EVENT ON FOREIGN FILM RENAISSANCE
BEVERLY HILLS, CA – The collaborative process between directors and cinematographers and an exploration of Hollywood during the age of mergers and acquisitions will be the topics explored by Dr. Christopher Beach and Dr. Thomas Schatz, respectively, who have been named the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' 2012 Academy Film Scholars. The Academy's Educational Grants Committee, which selected Beach and Schatz on the basis of their manuscript proposals, will present the first half of two $25,000 grants at a private luncheon on Monday, March 18.
Also on March 18, Tino Balio, an inaugural Academy Film Scholar in 2000, will present highlights from his bookThe Foreign Film Renaissance on American Screens 1946-1973 at a free public event at 7:30 p.m. at the Academy's Linwood Dunn Theater. Balio, professor emeritus of communication arts at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, will discuss how American audiences and critics responded to the works of such international filmmakers as François Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, Federico Fellini and Michelangelo Antonioni. Free tickets may be obtained at www.oscars.org.
Beach is an independent scholar currently based in Vermont. In The Image on the Screen: Directors, Cinematographers, and the Collaborative Process, the first book-length study focused on motion picture director-cinematographer collaborations, he will argue for the need to move beyond the auteurist paradigm and examine more closely the complex interaction between directors and other creative contributors.
Schatz is the Mary Gibbs Jones Centennial Chair of the Department of Radio-Television-Film at the University of Texas at Austin. He will complete a historical study of the American film industry in the period since the 1989 creation of Time-Warner and Sony-Columbia, which he has dubbed the "conglomerate age" in reference to the wave of mergers and acquisitions that transformed the movie industry.
Beach and Schatz will join 13 other Academy film scholars who are currently working on projects.
In addition to Balio, Academy film scholars who have completed projects are Cari Beauchamp; Donald Crafton, University of Notre Dame; Peter Decherney, University of Pennsylvania; Thomas Doherty, Brandeis University; Richard B. Jewell, University of Southern California; Peter Lev, Towson University; Dana Polan, New York University; David Rodowick, Harvard University; and Steven J. Ross, University of Southern California.
Established in 1999, the Academy Film Scholars program is designed to "stimulate and support the creation of new and significant works of film scholarship about aesthetic, cultural, educational, historical, theoretical or scientific aspects of theatrical motion pictures." The Academy's cultural and educational wing - the Academy Foundation - annually grants more than $1 million to film scholars, cultural organizations and film festivals throughout the U.S. and abroad. Through the Foundation, the Academy also presents a rich assortment of screenings and other public programs each year.
