ABS-CBN Reaps Major Honors in 2010 CMMA
(In the service of Filipino, in the service of God…)
SEEN IN THE CITY
Which ones are your favorite ABS-CBN teleserye these days? I rarely miss episodes of last year’s ‘May Bukas Pa’ and this year’s ‘Magkaribal”. What do you know, ABS-CBN proved to have not just quality top-rating programs but values-oriented programs as well which were recognized in the recent Catholic Mass Media Awards 2010 where it bagged major recognitions on television and radio categories.
Seven out of the 13 recognitions for TV went to ABS-CBN shows namely “Kulilits” for best program for children and youth; “Si Bro ang Star ng Pasko 2000” for station ID; “Maalaala Mo Kaya” for drama series; “Ang Aming mga Sala” for TV special; “TV Patrol Sabado” for special event coverage; “Rated K” for news magazine program; and “TV Patrol” for news program.
Top-rating ‘santaserye’ “Agua Bendita” was given a special citation alongside weekend public service program “Failon Ngayon” and reality-talk show “Bottomline.”
DZMM, on the other hand, dominated the night winning six out of seven CMMA’s for radio which include best branded radio ad for “Child Labor: Piko,” counseling program for “Dr. Love,” drama program for “Maalaala Mo Kaya,” business radio news or feature for “Sikap Pinoy,” public service program for “Tambalang Failon at Sanchez,” news program for “Radyo Patrol Balita,” and news commentary for “Pasada Sais Trenta.”
Meanwhile, ABS-CBN Publishing bagged the Best Special Feature award in the print category with its “Paalam Cory: An ABS-CBN Commemorative Special.” Star Recording Inc’s “May Bukas Pa” also took home a CMMA for Best Album-Inspirational. A special citation for Best Public Service program was also awarded to ABS-CBN Cebu’s “Halad sa Kapamilya.”
The CMMA is a tribute to those who are serving God through the mass media profession and promote Christian values in an outstanding way, in radio, press, advertising, television and film. Archdiocese of Manila through His EminenceArchbishop Jaime Cardinal Sin, organized the CMMA in 1978 to stress the importance of mass media and instill a sense of responsibility in communicators.
TO-BE-SEEN IN THE CITY
ISO Assigns Codes of PH and PHL to the Philippines
The Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco wishes to announce that effective 20 October 2010, the Philippines shall officially be referred to as PH and PHL, the two-letter and three-letter codes respectively assigned by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) for member countries.
The ISO has developed its ISO 3166-1 codes to specifically identify all its member countries. The codes assigned to the Philippines are PH and PHL. Thus, the use of the initials RP (for Republic of the Philippines) and PI (Philippine Islands) when referring to the Philippines will no longer be used or accepted as they are not in accordance with the ISO 3166-1and may only lead to ambiguity and confusion.
The Department of Foreign Affairs in Manila has instructed all Philippine Foreign Service Posts to adopt these two codes in referring to the Philippines in compliance with the ISO directive.
Why do we have to care about ISO codes? ISO codes are standards used by international organizations, to allow facilitation of the exchange of goods, services and information. These codes are of utmost importance because they are used by importers/exporters in bringing all those products (e.g. ensaymada, fish, dried fruits, etc) from the Philippines to the US and vice versa. Hence, industries that are ISO-compliant can do more business across the globe. Claro!
PERSONAL NOTES
Here is a personal account from Noel Nuguit, (the original manager of The Ultimate Heartthrob, Piolo Pascual) on Club Royale Ball, a successful Royal Tradition held at the SF Marriott, below:
“Hundreds of Club Royale members and friends gathered together in another magical evening of food, music, and non-stop dancing at the Marriot Marquis Hotel in downtown San Francisco last Saturday, October 9. The Grand Ballroom was adorned in shimmering white and orange and each tables was placed with a nice topiary of lush and white and orange flowers while some with orange orchids in full bloom.
Special kudos to Former Club Royale King Dirk Hinse who is the senior account executive of Mariott Marquis Hotel.
The Club Royale Ball has always been known to be the biggest Filipino-American grand party meant to raise funds for charitable mission in the jovial spirit of royal pageantry and glamour. Club Royale’s club’e effort has grown so much that it has elicited membership of the elite Filipino-American community throughout Northern California.
The main of highlight of the Club Royale Ball is the proclamation and coronation of the new Club Royale King and Queen, King James II (who is writer-columnist Bradford Adkins) and Queen Herminia Lavarias. The new king looked so gallant in his bejeweled purple number with a long cape specially tailored for him by Filipino craftsmen while Queen Herminia in a stunning shimmering white ball gown designed by Susan Pacifico.
Club Royale King Hall of Famer and Beauty Impresario Ferdinand Syquia de Villar won the Lifetime Achievement Award for his continuous support and active participation in all Club Royale events. Special recognition awards were handed to Claire Viray, Tessie Labitoria and Rolly Mungues.

California State Commissioner Rey Satorre who heads the Board of Regent looked so dashing in his classic tuxedo when he marched in with pretty charmer Camille Bernabeo. Some of the best dressed attendees were Michael Back who looks like a Hollywood celebrity in his tuxedo, Nina Bernardo, former Mrs. RP-Las Vegas, looked so stunning in her own tangerine outfit which she designed and created for herself. Former Little Miss RP-USA Kerlyn Horn, who gre up into a very lovely lady was a standout in her simple but so elegant white number (she just proved that real beauty does not have wear thick make up to be look so fabulous, way to go, Kerlyn). Another stunner was Leanna Richards, a friend of the Back family in her printed backless gown was a head turner. Miss RP-USA of 2009, Trina Dimaranan still shows that she’s still has the X-factor that made her a beauty titlist.. Rema Safrani and husband Surekh looked so refreshing in their Indian-inspired ensemble. Reggie Panganiban who was one of the strongest contenders for this year’s queen was in her best elements wearing her light blue ball gown. Daly City Council member Dave Canepa showed up late but still a charmer. Also seen was ace photographer Richard Lao who was there to cover the coronation of the new set of royal couple.
The program was initially hosted and anchored by TV writer-director Noel Nuguit and Club Royal Executive Board Member Bath Pasco while the master of ceremony was Jonathan Gocco. QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"Every day, a Filipino comes up to me, holds my hand and tells me, 'Thank you for Charice.' I don't think they should be thanking me because Charice is theirs..” by Music Guru, David Foster. The jampacked (almost no-complimentary tickets were issued) David Foster & Friends concert in Manila’s Araneta Coliseum last Saturday, Oct 23 had 10,000+ fans screaming, clapping and adoring all the artists to the amazement of Foster (Charice received multiple standing ovations during the show). Foster said that he will build up the Filipina singer to become "the first true Asian world superstar." Watch Charice in Glee’s future episodes every Tuesday at Fox at 8pm pst.
