PAL poised for US expansion, anticipates growth opportunities with lifting of ban

09 April 2014

Philippine Airlines (PAL) is ready to implement an expansion plan in the United States, following the re-classification of the country’s aviation safety rating to Category 1, which it said would boost tourism and trade and open up new and exciting opportunities for the flag carrier.

With the upgrade, the Philippines now re-joins the ranks the most important aviation nations in the world, made up of select countries that meet the US’ strict standards of aviation safety.

Following the re-classification, the flag carrier said it is set to immediately deploy a fleet of newly - acquired Boeing 777-300ER aircraft for its long-haul flights to the US. With this, passengers can now enjoy non-stop flights to Los Angeles and San Francisco aboard new aircraft equipped with the most modern cabin and state-of the-art amenities, including lie-flat beds in business class.

PAL President & Chief Operating Officer Ramon S. Ang said: “Your flag carrier welcomes the return of the country’s aviation rating to Category 1. This is a culmination of the government’s hard work, as exemplified by the efforts of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines, to upgrade the country’s international aviation safety standards.”

“This latest development allows us to deploy our modern and fuel-efficient Boeing 777-300ER fleet to the US, and enables us to explore new destination opportunities in one of the Philippines’ largest passenger markets,” he added.

Currently, PAL operates a total of 26 weekly flights to the US, with frequencies to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Honolulu and Guam.

The flag carrier said it would deploy six Boeing 777-300ERs, amounting to US$1.2 billion, for US flights within a month’s time. For its flights to Honolulu and Guam, PAL will continue to utilize new wide body Airbus A330-300s and single-aisle A320-200s.

Apart from ushering a new era in the flag carrier’s trans-pacific service, Mr. Ang added that the upgrade will also allow PAL to explore possible airline partnerships with foreign carriers in order to maximize its growth potential.

About Philippine Airlines

Philippine Airlines operates the widest route network among all other Philippine carriers, with 29 domestic and 35 international destinations. Now on its 73rd year, it has grown resilient and maintains its place as a major player in the country’s aviation industry. New Management, led by PAL President Ramon S. Ang, is committed to make the country’s flag carrier soar once more among the leading airlines of Asia.

The airline’s inflight and ground services have been enhanced in line with the thrust to address customer needs. From 2012 –2013, the flag carrier expanded its route network by launching flights to new destinations in the Philippines (Basco, Batanes); Asia (Guangzhou, China); Australia (Darwin, Brisbane); the Middle East (Abu Dubai, Dubai, Riyadh, Dammam) and Europe (London). PAL now provides a wide range of flight offerings, empowering a customer to book a flight based on actual needs. (End)

FAA Announces the Republic of the Philippines’ Aviation Safety Rating

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) today announced that the Republic of the Philippines complies with international safety standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and has been granted a Category 1 rating.

The country previously held a Category 1 rating until January 2008, when it was downgraded to a Category 2. A Category 2 rating means a country either lacks laws or regulations necessary to oversee air carriers in accordance with minimum international standards, or that its civil aviation authority – equivalent to the FAA for aviation safety matters – is deficient in one or more areas, such as technical expertise, trained personnel, record keeping or inspection procedures.

The return to Category 1 status is based on a March 2014 FAA review of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines. A Category 1 rating means the country’s civil aviation authority complies with ICAO standards. With the International Aviation Safety Assessment (IASA) Category 1 rating, the Republic of the Philippines’ air carriers can add flights and service to the United States and carry the code of U.S. carriers.

As part of the FAA’s IASA program, the agency assesses the civil aviation authorities of all countries with air carriers that have applied to fly to the United States, currently conduct operations to the United States or participate in code sharing arrangements with U.S. partner airlines and makes that information available to the public. The assessments determine whether or not foreign civil aviation authorities are meeting ICAO safety standards, not FAA regulations.

In order to maintain a Category 1 rating, a country must adhere to the safety standards of ICAO, the United Nations’ technical agency for aviation that establishes international standards and recommended practices for aircraft operations and maintenance. IASA information is at www.faa.gov/about/initiatives/iasa/ .

LOS ANGELES, CA, October 15, 2014 – When asked to describe in one word what ASAP Live in LA would be at the packed press conference that was livestreamed on TFC.tv and TFC20.com/ASAP last October 8 from the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena, the following cast members said:

Gerald Anderson: “Awesome!”

Maja Salvador: “Spectacular!”

Yeng Constantino:Astig!” (Super cool!)

Bamboo: “Class Act.”

Zsa Zsa Padilla: “Powerful.”

Martin Nievera: “Unforgettable.”

Enchong Dee: “Memorable.”

Kathryn Bernardo: “Fun!”

Daniel Padilla: “Intense!”

Gary Valenciano: “I wanted to add on to what everyone said and it has to do with why ASAP is where it is today. You have a bunch of artists here and there are many more artists out there. But there is a reason why we are chosen to be part of this show. I think that God has a great plan for why we are a part of this show. So, the word I’m going to choose is ‘blessed’.”

Indeed, the words of TFC’s 20th Anniversary Ambassador Valenciano and his nine press con co-panelists were veritable harbingers of what ASAP Live in LA last October 11 turned out to be.

Not the power-packed joint concert of superstars Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull in Staples Center, or the multi-cultural, multi-act Super Sonico Festival brought by the teams of LAMC and Coachella to Shrine Auditorium, or the touring and local culinary stars of James Beard Foundation’s Taste Los Angeles in Vibiana could distract 12,000 Filipino fans from trooping to historic Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena to take part in the day-long festivities climaxed by a one-of-a-kind three-hour, live, world-class Filipino entertainment.

Filipino and Fil-Am performers join hands

When ABS-CBN and TFC North America promised 40 stars would perform at ASAP Live in LA, they actually meant at least 40.

Believing in always putting great value for the money that TFC subscribers and fans pay, ticket buyers did not only get a star-studded complement of talented cast members from the Philippines; they were treated to spectacular on-stage collaborations with U.S.-based Filipino singing greats like Jam Morales, Ella Mae Saison and Tootsie Guevarra, and international Fil-Am superstars like apl.de.ap of Black Eyed Peas and Jessica Sanchez of American Idol fame. Also acknowledged at the show were well-known Fil-Ams from the Hollywood industry like Tia Carrere, Reggie Lee, Mark Nicolas and Fritz Friedman.

Carrere told Balitang America: “ASAP was amazing. What a monster concert! I mean, Apl being here, Charice, Jessica Sanchez, and all these stars from the Philippines, I’m so happy to be able to be introduced to them. It’s three hours of non-stop energy here. I can’t wait to see it on TV.”

More than just entertainment

While ASAP director Johnny Manahan, ASAP Business Unit Head Joyce Liquicia and their Manila team in collaboration with TFC North America production team led by John-D Lazatin made sure that everything from the production numbers to the costumes to the technical set-up lived up to high standards, everyone in the cast and crew knew that they were here to deliver more than just entertainment.

“You are talking about people flying in from as far as Alaska, Hawaii and Canada and fans representing by creating their own ASAP Live in LA attires. You have people who saved their dollars and planned their work vacations so they can watch the show. We all know that what we should give are more than song-and-dance numbers; we are here to give our hearts, our love, our Kapamilya spirit and Pinoy soul to them. We want them to feel they’ve come home,” said TFC North America ASAP Live in LA Project Lead Ricky Resurreccion, also the region’s head of Ad Sales, Trade Marketing & Events.

So, the stars braved a thunderstorm, flood, traffic and no sleep to catch their flights from Manila to Los Angeles, mingled with fans as they visited Los Angeles landmarks to tape segments, took part in a Meet and Chat with lucky ticket holders, rehearsed to perfection and tirelessly shared their experiences and activities on social media for their millions of followers around the world.

Promoting Filipino presence, the City and County of Los Angeles tourism and voter mobilization for the coming November elections also did not go unnoticed by the Office of the Mayor. Through the assistance of Los Angeles Philippine Consul General Leo Herrera Lim, Filipino American Service Group, Inc. Executive Director Susan Dilkes and West Valley Area Representative Max Reyes, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti issued a Proclamation making October 11, 2014 ABS-CBN The Filipino Channel’s “ASAP Live in LA” Community Empowerment Day. ABS-CBN Integrated News and Current Affairs HeadGing Reyes presented the Proclamation to the crowd before the show show while Valenciano and Nievera led a group that presented it anew to the audience.ina

Meanwhile. ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation Chairman Gina Lopez made a sterling presentation of her Philippine ecotourism program before the concert to remind the audience to reconnect to the homeland in a sustainable, progressive way.

Celebrating TFC’s 20th Anniversary

For North America where TFC started, ASAP Live in LA was the perfect bookend for the TFC 20 Gala that kicked off its 20th anniversary celebration.

TFC’s first ever ambassador Martin Nievera, who performed with current ambassador Gary Valenciano at the gala back in March said about TFC: “When I was distributing TFC flyers, it was just a concept, just an idea, a big satellite dish. Twenty years later it’s like the best thing they’ve invented since the balikbayan box.”

ABS-CBN President Charo Santos Concio saw the early days differently. “I knew in my heart it was just a matter of time, yes, because the Filipinos love artists, love entertainment, and you know we’re one of the happiest people on earth,” she said.

ABS-CBN North America Managing Director Olivia De Jesus said: “ASAP Live in LA is topnotch entertainment as a means of connecting Filipinos together to celebrate their Filipinoness. And that has been the mission of TFC in building its relationship with its customers these past 20 years.”

“For us to have been able to be part of the lives for the community for this long, it’s just, I think, something that’s really an inspiring thing, and I expect will go on for 20 more, and many more beyond my lifetime,” said ABS-CBN Global COO Raffy Lopez.

Critically acclaimed “The Trial” kicks off exciting Fall movie season for TFC@theMovies this Friday

Must-see court drama with John Lloyd Cruz, Gretchen Barretto, Richard Gomez, Enrique Gil & Jessy Mendiola screens in US and Canada starting October 24

LOS ANGELES, CA, October 23, 2014 – The reviews for ABS-CBN Star Cinema’s latest offering on its 20th year, The Trial, are in, and the verdict is a victory for Philippine cinema.

A festival-worthy piece that may usher in a new age for mainstream Philippine cinema,” raved Julia Allende of pep.ph.

An emotionally involving legal drama presented with sufficient flair and built around the crackerjack portrayal of John Lloyd Cruz as a 27-year-old simpleton, Ronald Jimenez Jr., accused of raping his tutor, Bessie Buenaventura (Jessy Mendiola),” praised Rito P. Asilo of Inquirer.net.

At a time when romantic and family comedies are playing jump ball with the box-office crown, Star Cinema and director Chito Roño make a surprising gamble on a film that’s neither one nor the other… it’s a promising step towards seeing more films in the name of originality, regardless of genre,” said Zig Marasigan in his review on rappler.com.

Indeed, with a stream of record-breaking box office triumphs of romantic and family comedies and love triangles, the country’s premier film outfit braved the road less travelled with a compelling court drama that involves a complicated and odd nexus of characters and tackles the sensitive topics of rape, the mentally handicapped, gay parents, marital problems, social media abuse and the country’s justice system.

To pull this off, it takes the caliber of award-winning director Chito Roño, the story and screenplay by Ricky Lee, Kriz G. Gazmen and Enrico Santos, and the sterling cast led by John Lloyd Cruz, Gretchen Barretto, Richard Gomez, Enrique Gil, Jessy Mendiola, Sylvia Sanchez, Vivian Velez, Vincent De Jesus, Benjamin Alves, among others.

“After its opening in the Philippines, The Trial is making critics think, triggering moviegoers to talk and discuss the film, and creating buzz for film awards. They say fall is the season in North America to bring in the good stuff, the movies of serious value and content. As part of TFC’s and Star Cinema’s 20th anniversary, TFC@theMovies couldn’t have chosen a better film offering to kick off its fall movie season here with The Trial. It is simply a must-see,” said ABS-CBN Global Head of Theatricals John-D Lazatin.

A Curious Case: Flaws and Secrets

The marriage of lawyer JULIAN (Richard Gomez) and developmental psychologist AMANDA (Gretchen Barretto) is already crumbling. Aggravated by the tragic death of their only son, their relationship now is beyond any chance of mending.

That chance came when one day Julian and Amanda encounter a curious case. RONALD (John Lloyd Cruz), a person with intellectual disability, is accused of raping the niece of a renowned university head, BESSY (Jessy Mendiola). The already curious case becomes more intriguing when they learn that Ronald was their son’s best buddy.

Amanda is hired by Bessy’s camp to look into Ronald to prove his lucidity and intention – hence, implicating him of the crime. However, as she tries to get to know him, the truth about Ronald and his relationship with Bessy and her deceased son all unfold before her. Believing that Ronald could have not committed the crime, she withdraws from Bessy’s camp and decides to help him.

Working together, Julian and Amanda exert every possible effort to acquit Ronald of the crime. Little do they know that his case would mean facing the truth about their broken family – something they have forever lied to themselves about.

“Memorable,” said ABS-CBN North America Managing Director Olivia De Jesus. “The Trial is a film that reels you in as a moviegoer and makes you ask what would you have done if you were one of the characters? In the end, it will make you look into yourself, your own relationships with your family and with people seen as ‘different’ by society.”

GMA NETWORK LAUNCHES FIRST BAYANISERYE ‘ILUSTRADO’

“I die without seeing dawn's light shining on my country... You, who will see it, welcome it for me... Don't forget those who fell during the nighttime.”

― Jose Rizal, Noli Me Tangere

He is widely regarded as the country’s most beloved hero. This Monday, get to know the man behind the hero as GMA News and Public Affairs brings to life the untold stories of Jose Rizal with the world premiere of the first-everBayaniserye on primetime television, ILUSTRADO.

Ilustrado offers an educational and entertaining viewing experience as it features the life of Rizal as a young student in the Philippines to his travels in Europe as well as the major events and influences that shaped his mind and actions as a reformist. Through his letters to his family and friends, Ilustrado depicts Rizal’s struggles while living abroad. And through his love letters, the series tries to illustrate his relationship with women and why he is considered a notorious lover boy.

Produced by the same creative team behind the highly-acclaimed historical drama Katipunan and mini-series Bayan Ko, Ilustrado boasts of an ensemble of topnotch artists led by award-winning actor and Kapuso homegrown star Alden Richards as Jose Rizal.

Joining him are Kylie Padilla as Leonor Rivera, who many historians believe was Rizal’s true love, and Solenn Heussaff as Nellie Boustead, the French woman Rizal almost married.

Portraying the role of Rizal’s beloved parents are this year’s Cinemalaya best actress Eula Valdez (Teodora Alonzo) and Ricardo Cepeda (Francisco Mercado). Freddie Webb gives life to Rizal’s uncle, Don Jose Alberto, while Rizal’s brother Paciano Mercado is played by Marco Alcaraz. Child star Jhiz Deocareza plays the young Rizal.

Also incorporated in the Bayaniserye are fictional characters representing some of Rizal’s antagonists – mother and son Conchita and Venchito Monteverde (played by five-time Urian best actress Jaclyn Jose and Polo Ravales, respectively); Padre Amado (Lito Legaspi); and young Venchito (Sean Ross).

The cast also includes Max Collins as Consuela Ortiga, JC Tiuseco as Antonio Luna, Lucho Ayala as Jose Alejandrino, Bryan Benedict as Juan Luna, Jak Roberto as Maximo Viola, and Rhen Escano as Isidra Monteverde.

Under the direction of King Marc Baco, Ilustrado is filmed using the sophisticated Arri Alexa camera, along with equally high-end lenses provided by CMB Film Services Inc. GMA Post Production, using up-to-date 3D visual effects technology, has recreated the grandeur of the European cities where Rizal lived and completed his novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo.

The series’ theme song is composed and performed by Gloc9 featuring Lirah Bermudez with additional arrangement by Simon Tan.

Ilustrado, the first Bayaniserye on Philippine primetime, airs beginning Monday, October 20, 9:30pm right after Hiram na Alaala.

Synopsis

Three hours outside of Addis Ababa, a bright 14-year-old girl is on her way home from school when men on horses swoop in and kidnap her. The brave Hirut grabs a rifle and tries to escape, but ends up shooting her would-be husband. In her village, the practice of abduction into marriage is common and one of Ethiopia’s oldest traditions.

Meaza Ashenafi, an empowered and tenacious young lawyer, arrives from the city to represent Hirut and argue that she acted in self-defense. Meaza boldly embarks on a collision course between enforcing civil authority and abiding by customary law, risking the ongoing work of her women’s legal-aid practice to save Hirut’s life.

Based on a real-life story, this film goes beneath the layer of polite social customs to explore an aggressively rooted patriarchy that perpetuates inhospitable conditions for women in Ethiopia and portrays the complexity of a country’s transformation toward equal rights, featuring the courageous generation that dares to own it. - Sundance Film Festival

Six years after the violent death of her husband, Amelia (Essie Davis) is at a loss. She struggles to discipline her 'out of control' 6 year-old, Samuel (Noah Wiseman), a son she finds impossible to love. Samuel's dreams are plagued by a monster he believes is coming to kill them both. When a disturbing storybook called 'The Babadook' turns up at their house, Samuel is convinced that the Babadook is the creature he's been dreaming about. His hallucinations spiral out of control, he becomes more unpredictable and violent. Amelia, genuinely frightened by her son's behaviour, is forced to medicate him.But when Amelia begins to see glimpses of a sinister presence all around her, it slowly dawns on her that the thing Samuel has been warning her about may be real.THE BABADOOK is a psychological thriller in the tradition of Polanski's classic domestic horrors (Rosemary's Baby, The Tenant, Repulsion).Using her award winning short horror Monsteras a springboard, writer/director Jennifer Kent developed the script for her feature film debut at the Binger Lab in Amsterdam with assistance from SCREEN NSW and SCREEN AUSTRALIA.
