SPOTLIGHT ON

DIREK KIM TUMIBAY

SEEN IN THE CITY

(SAN FRANCISCO) – Before Director Mauricio ‘Kim’ Tumibay of Sacramento-based TWISTED MIND PRODUCTION FILM INTERNATIONAL AND CASTING SERVICES AGENCY started pre-production work on his latest indie film WALDO, LUTANG SA KAWALAN to be shot in the Bay Area, he struggled as a Stunt Man in the Philippine movies and gradually progressed into a full-pledge Stunt Instructor for Hataw Na (1995), Mangarap Ka (1995), Bayarang Puso (1996), Tikim (2001) and Rekrut starring Joem Bascon and JM De Guzman (2010). Before that, he acted in Alabang Girls, Grease Gun Gang, Ang Utol Kong Hoodlum and Pitong Gamol in the 90’s. He even worked the teleserye shows for several years, as Assistant Director before migrating here in the US.

So he knows without a doubt how challenging movie making is. But he now considers his biggest challenge he faced, was when he was diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon Cancer only last year, while living here in the US. He lost a lot of weight, he was in grave pain 24/7 and totally surrendered his fate to faith. Through it all, his loving wife, Lalaine Tumibay never wavered love and support and sought medical treatment, the best this country could have. And lo and behold – Direk Kim, as he is endearingly called in the movie industry, survived. “I credit the excellent medical system here in the US for my current health and well being,“ summarizes Direk Kim. He is now clear of cancer is raring to go back to work.

So, what is his new movie Waldo all about? Direk Kim briefly explained that it is a dark story of an embalmer named Waldo, surrounded by equally dark characters, starting from the owners of the mortuary business, Dr Ugalde and his daughter Lolita up to their business and love partners who have dark secrets as well. The movie is based on the story "EMBALSAMADOR" by famous Filipino writers Buddy Palad & Alex Socorro and screenplay written by Rose Paquette. It stars TFC’s Adobo Nation’s Lee Robin Salazar as Waldo, together with actresses Princess Ryan, Miriam Pantig and many more. His production team includes his Producer, John Valdez, Casting Director Lalaine Tumibay, Production Coordinator Marybelle Sayson, Production Assistant Beth Roldan, among others.

‘FLOW’ PHOTO EXHIBIT

OPENS IN SAN JOSE

SEEN IN THE CITY

(SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA) – "FLOW" A One Man Photo Exhibit of Fresno-based Roberto Carlos with guest artist Dr. Bernadette Escalona of San Jose, CA formally opened last Friday, June 7th @ 1:00PM at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library (4th Floor Exhibit Gallery) in San Jose, CA and will be open, FREE admission to the public until July 7, 2013. Both artists attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony together with Milpitas Mayor Joe Esteves, Consul Reginald Bernabe and 2013 Miss Teen San Jose Alexandra Drechsler.

The photography exhibit highlights the beauty of water and their grandeur that entertain us – from rivers, to beaches, to seas, islands, waterfalls, lakes, among others. This Columnist witnessed water shots taken from Canada, Mexico, Philippines, USA, etc. In this exhibit, both Artists would like to convey the message that water in most cultures around the world symbolizes life and life giving as well as serenity. Water represents inner purity and renewal, cleansing away the negative thoughts from the body, soul, emotion and the mind. As a matter of fact, the Chinese character for ‘eternity’ is indicated by a stream of running water.

Also according to the Artists, water is important to the environment and people’s way of life that we should not waste or abuse it. It’s as essential as the air we breathe that we should preserve it. That is the essence of “FLOW.”

Let your inner experiences flow. Check out “FLOW.”

WINTER IN THE BLOOD is a gorgeous film (really, it’s beautiful – serene and painterly) by Alex & Andrew Smith (The Slaughter Rule) that’s set/filmed in Montana and based on James Welch’s classic novel about a self-destructive Blackfoot Indian battling past tragedy and alcoholism. Chaske Spencer, you’ll recognize him from the Twilight Saga, is chock-full of heart and charisma with a performance that drives the story along his character’s ethereal journey.

CASTING BY - A documentary that brings to light the great and unsung importance of the entire casting profession on the films of the last 50 years, and chronicles one of the early pioneers of casting, the late Marion Dougherty, whose career spanned half a century and brought countless now-legendary actors to the screen in iconic roles, such as James Dean, Dustin Hoffman, Bette Midler, Al Pacino, Glenn Close, Robert Duvall, Gene Hackman, and several others.

FOUR DOGS – a relatable LA-local indie written/directed by Joe Burke. Story follows a 20-something actor who’s hit the Hollywood slump and can’t quite get a handle on who he is. He lives with his aunt, smokes up and walks her four dogs as a form of rent. Things get interesting when his aunt’s friend moves in… The film is shot very naturally, with a realness that’s so seamless it borders on organic. Oliver Cooper (Generation X) and Dan Bakkedahl (Veep, The Daily Show) have fab performances and get to show off some true-to-life, subversive humor.

CASTING BY

Debuts Exclusively on HBO August 5, 2013

Synopsis: Putting the spotlight on filmmaking’s unsung hero – the casting director – CASTING BY takes us on a fast-paced journey through the last half century of Hollywood history from an entirely new perspective. Pioneers like Marion Dougherty and Lynn Stalmaster were iconoclasts whose exquisite taste and gut instincts helped put the final nail in the coffin of the old studio system and usher in the New Hollywood with movies like ‘Midnight Cowboy’, ‘The Graduate’, ‘Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid’ and ‘Bonnie and Clyde. Afforded the unprecedented freedom and power of the new medium of television, they broke away from traditional typecasting, created a new kind of leading man and leading lady and brought actors like James Dean, Dustin Hoffman, Bette Midler, Robert Duvall, Gene Hackman, and dozens of other undiscovered future Hollywood stars to the big screen for the first time.

CASTING BY interweaves personal narratives from countless actors and directors, including Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen, Clint Eastwood, Glenn Close, Robert Duvall, Jeff Bridges, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Diane Lane, Jon Voight, Bette Midler and John Travolta, with extensive archival material to reconstruct the untold tale of Hollywood’s most invisible and unheralded profession. Through an exploration of the Hollywood power dynamics that continue to belittle their work, the film shines a spotlight on the casting profession; giving them the credit they have long been denied.

Synopsis

They wiggled, they jiggled, they wore low cut gowns and short shorts, they kow-towed to the club owners and smiled at the customers…and they did it all, just to play the music they loved. THE GIRLS IN THE BAND tells the poignant, untold stories of female jazz and big band instrumentalists and their fascinating, groundbreaking journeys from the late 30′s to the present day. These incredibly talented women endured sexism, racism and diminished opportunities for decades, yet continued to persevere, inspire and elevate their talents in a field that seldom welcomed them. Today a new breed of gifted young women are taking their rightful place in the world of jazz, which can no longer deny their talents.

Filmmaker's Comments

It started with a phone call from a friend telling me that she’d met a woman who had been a big-band musician in the forties. As a kid I spent my summers in Ocean Park, and as you walked the magical pier at night you could hear the music drifting from the glamorous dance halls nearby. That started my great love for big band music and by the time I was in my twenties I had seen or heard probably every major band that ever played the West Coast. Never once did I see a woman play an instrument in any of those big bands. True, there were a few all-female bands, but to me they were mainly “novelty acts." Real, honest, female big band musicians? My curiosity was piqued and out of that came a desire to find out if there was anything worth exploring. Much to my surprise a lot of interesting information began to surface. There were many women musicians who had devoted their lives to jazz and swing band music. Not only in the past, but all the way through the 20th century and up to the present day.

Armed with a dynamo executive producer, Mike Greene and a couple of generous grants from Hugh Hefner and Herb Alpert, THE GIRLS IN THE BAND started taking shape. We hope that the great joy we all had in learning about these amazing women, will be shared by the viewers and that the film will bring these artists the admiration and respect they so rightly deserve. This film is my tribute to their courage and musical artistry, which has never been properly celebrated. It’s also an homage to my younger self who has never stopped loving jazz, music, and the golden sound of a trumpet. Our greatest satisfaction will come if this film can inspire a new crop of young female jazz musicians to stand on the shoulders of those early pioneers and to reach for the stars.

L.A. Based Musicians from the Film, Available for Interviews:

Roz Cron, 88 – Saxophone

From the young age of 16, gifted saxophone player Roz Cron was being wooed by big bands. Her first all-female big band job was with The Ada Leonard Orchestra, and she quickly moved on to the all-black International Sweethearts of Rhythm, considered by many as one of the top big bands in the country, male or female. As the only white girl in the band, Roz learned first-hand about the evils of Jim Crow and the dangers of racial mixing in the South, and she was often harassed, and once jailed by Southern small town sheriffs, for “associating with negroes.” She toured Europe with the Sweethearts during the war and stayed with the band until 1945. She then settled in Los Angeles to raise a family and continued playing in local dance bands and orchestras.

Clora Bryant, 85 – Trumpet/Flugelhorn

Clora was invited to join the Sweethearts at age 17, after playing only one gig with them. But her father thought the band too “worldly” for his young daughter. Instead, she stayed in California and her big break came when she was hired to play with the Ada Leonard Orchestra on a weekly television show. Sadly, she was let go after only one show because of audience complaints about a black woman on the bandstand. After that, she toured successfully with her “Tribute to Louis Armstrong” which had long runs in Canada and Las Vegas, and in the 1960s she was featured on "The Ed Sullivan Show." She became a close friend and protégé of Dizzy Gillespie, and played with Charlie Parker and in Gerald Wilson’s big band. In the 1980s, she became the first American woman trumpeter to tour the USSR in a cultural exchange program.

"THE SPECTACULAR NOW"

A FILM BY JAMES PONSOLDT

A FILM BY ANDREW LAUREN PRODUCTIONS

STARRING MILES TELLER, SHAILENE WOODLEY, BRIE LARSON, KYLE CHANDLER, JENNIFER JASON LEIGH AND MARY ELIZABETH WINSTEAD

Sutter Keely (Miles Teller) lives in the now. It's a good place for him. A high school senior, charming and self-possessed, he's the life of the party, loves his job at a men's clothing store, and has no plans for the future. A budding alcoholic, he's never far from his supersized, whisky-fortified thirst-master cup. But after being dumped by his girlfriend, Sutter gets drunk and wakes up on a lawn with Aimee Finicky (Shailene Woodley) hovering over him. She's different: the "nice girl" who reads science fiction and doesn't have a boyfriend. She does have dreams, while Sutter lives in a world of impressive self-delusion. And yet they're drawn to each other.

This adaptation of Tim Tharp's novel The Spectacular Now captures the insecurity and confusion of adolescence without looking for tidy truths. Young actors rarely portray teens with the maturity that Teller and Woodley display, and they are phenomenal together. THE SPECTACULAR NOW is a funny, compassionate and poignant look at young adulthood, written by (500) DAYS OF SUMMERscribes Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, directed by James Ponsoldt (SMASHED) and produced by Tom McNulty, Shawn Levy, Andrew Lauren and Michelle Krumm.

LIFE OF A KING

A Jake Goldberger Film

“Teach the un-teachable, reach the un-reachable, and always think before you move.”

- Eugene Brown, Founder, Big Chair Chess Club

LIFE OF A KING is inspired by the true story of an ex-con who takes on the challenge of giving frustrated, disenfranchised youth, living in the shadow of our nation’s capital, hope and life lessons through the game of chess. Academy Award© winner Cuba Gooding, Jr. stars as Eugene Brown, whose 18 year incarceration taught him to “think before you move.” When Eugene takes a group of resident high school detention dwellers and teaches them chess as a meaningful way to pass the time, and in the process teaches them about life and choices, they soon learn there’s more to life than the crime ridden streets that rob children of their youth and their future. In Brown, they find someone who believes they can be more, and is willing to stand by them, helping them to break the cycle and succeed. For the first time, these teens, and many more that come after them, experience a hope that maybe they might rewrite their assumed destiny.
