GLENN DONAIRE

WINS AGAIN!

(San Leandro’s good son bags a 2nd World Title after defeating Omar Salado)

SEEN IN THE CITY

Glenn Donaire did again! The new WBO Latino Super Flyweight Champion of the World Glenn “The Filipino Bomber” Donaire (19-4-1, 10 KOs), scored a hard-fought twelve round ‘Unanimous Decision’ battle over Two-Time World Title Challenger "Omar Salado" (24-5-2, 15 KOs) on Friday night, March 16, 2012, at the Auditorio Plaza Condesa in Mexico City, Mexico.

Nearly two-and-a-half months after jumpstarting his career by destroying ex-world champion Alex “Nene” Sanchez by TKO, Glenn Donaire, under the guidance of his father Nonito Donaire Sr. stepped back into the ring last Friday in Mexico City, Mexico, taking on Omar Salado, defending his WBC regional title he earned on December 9th.

Prior to his 2011 return, Glenn was forced to take a hiatus from boxing when his mother lost her job, creating financial constraints. Not being able to survive on his father’s wages, Glenn took a job as a delivery truck driver working over 70 hours a week forcing boxing to become secondary. Now training out of the Kennel Boxing Gym in San Leandro, CA, Glenn is determined to carve out his own legacy and reward his father for the unconditional time he has dedicated to him.

“I was focused and ready, me, my father and my promoter Tuto Zabala, we all did our part,” says Donaire of his latest victory.

Glenn Donaire is looking for another match this year for the WBO Championship Title.

Congratulations, Glenn! You deserve it! Yes, I’m proud of to be a member of Team Glenn Donaire!

Francis Ang, a Filipino, Wins ‘FOOD & WINE’ Magazine's First Annual "The People's Best New Pastry Chef-2012”!

Thanks to one of our readers, John E. Abordo, D.P.M., Director of Podiatric Health Services Golden Valley Health Centers, who brought to our attention and emailed us the story of Francis Ang, a Filipino, who was recently named Food & Wine magazine's West Coast "People's Best Pastry Chef" as well as one of Zagat's "30 Under 30" in San Francisco.

His email furthers, which we edited a bit for brevity goes, “Finding inspiration from his travels throughout Asia, Francis creates desserts such as rum baba with pineapple three ways, kaffir leaf-coconut sorbet, basil seeds; and a chocolate mousse bombe with orange cream, hazelnut crunch, mandarins, and hazelnut ice cream.

Francis grew up in the Philippines and still remembers the delicious dishes his dad and grandmother use to cook when he was growing up. He moved to San Francisco when he was 19, where he enrolled in the City College of San Francisco's culinary program. An internship at the Copenhagen Bakery in Burlingame was an early indicator that Francis was meant to be working as a pastry chef.

Currently, Francis works as the Executive Pastry Chef at the The Fifth Floor, the acclaimed Gary Danko restaurant in San Francisco. Francis originally joined the team on the savory side as a line cook. When executive chef David Bazirgan recognized Ang's passion for desserts, Bazirgan worked closely with Francis to hone in on his pastry skills and quickly promoted him to pastry chef.

Prior to joining the Fifth Floor, Francis was working at the where he was lucky enough to train under Gary Danko himself, learning about pastries and desserts-making ice creams, sorbets, mousses, soufflés, etc.”
