THE ISLANDERS TV

NEEDS VOLUNTEERS

TO-BE SEEN IN THE CITY

(Hayward, CA) – The Islanders TV Show hosted and produced by a veteran broadcast journalist and retired educator, Charito C. Benipayo announces its need for volunteers to help assist in the continuance of this public service television program in Alameda County and beyond.

Under the auspices of Chabot College Television, Ch. 28-KCMC, “The Islanders TV Show” has been given an hour slot of airing every Monday, except holiday from 6:30-7:30PM. Geared to but not limited to the Filipino American audiences in the immediate vicinity of Alameda and the Bay Area, manages to get “guest slots” at other cable stations in the area, i.e. Oakland, Alameda, Union City, Fremont, Hayward , Union City and the entire East Bay. It has been hitting its peak for the past 15 years now , especially because not only was it being produced by a FilAmerican, but it was uniquely qualified to showcase talents of neighbors, friends , advocates and champions focusing on information parted by local leaders for the betterment of the community and its citizenry.

What “The Islanders TV Show” proposed and continuously providing is a sounding board of significant information given to the community as well as springboard for local talents who may never get any kind of publicity other than through community access. The “Islanders TV Show ” served this mission well. To date the show has continuously become a great avenue for many high school and college students (and retired individuals) who were interested in television or communications and therefore encouraging them to spare their free time to volunteer and help in its continuing production.

“I am very proud to have become an alumnus of this show as a volunteer some years ago and now I am working in the mainstream show, “Entertainment Tonight” , exclaimed one of the former students who used to volunteer. “ The hours we shared and spent in helping the production has produced a wonderful result and we were given certificate of recognition as an added hours to our extra –curricular activities”, explained another college student.

High School and college students (or retired men or women ) are also encouraged to participate and volunteer ; no experience necessary-free training is provided. Those interested may contact :510/301-4693 or visit our website at http://islanders-tv.webs.com. Email cbenipayo01@yahoo.com

Like everything on television, the show attempts and succeeds at measuring issues at hand and ensuring the community is informed effectively . Community leaders and advocates are also welcome to become guests- contact us at the above numbers write us at 603 Santa Clara Avenue, Alameda, CA 94501.

Filipino American Jonathan Mangosing of San Francisco Smuin Ballet Company.

JONATHAN MAGOSING,

A FRESH FACE IN SF BALLET

TO-BE SEEN IN THE CITY

(San Francisco) – It’s no secret Filipino-Americans are on the move, but one in particular, is doing it on the stage and his ballet moves are truly worth following. I caught up with dancer Jonathan Mangosing in San Francisco, where he appears as the fresh and driven new face of the Smuin Ballet company, the dynamic chamber ballet company in the City.

Mangosing is no newcomer to the ballet scene, however, and has credits with the San Francisco and Hong Kong ballet companies to prove it. “It’s all about the discipline,” he says, speaking with an assuredness earned through years of tough training and complete dedication to his craft.

Though his family roots are in Zambales, Mangosing was born in California and grew up in San Diego. At home, he had no exposure to ballet or dance. But he remembers clearly that, as a child, watching Paula Abdul’s dance videos on television had made an impression, nothing short of indelible. By the age of ten, at his mother insistence to stop watching television and finding something to do, he set out to learn to dance, and he has been dancing ever since. To this day, Mangosing credits his mother for pushing him to pursue his dreams with a loving, but steady hand.

“You should see him dance… he is so incredibly flexible,” says Celia Fushille, Artistic Director of Smuin Ballet. His fluid lines and technical accuracy indeed reflect the refined classicism of his training, and his temperament reads with aplomb and elegance. But, do not be fooled, as he is equally versed in hip-hop, jazz, and other pop styles. Perhaps it is here, where he comes full circle with the dance videos he enjoyed during his childhood.

His journey has not come without sacrifice. “I always knew I was different,” he recalls, in complete awareness that his handsome Pinoy looks were not always in perfect synchronicity with the pale lines of the corps de ballet. To its credit, the Smuin Ballet company recognizes Mangosing’s strength and individuality, and provides for him the perfect stage on which to showcase his quality and talent. For so many reasons, Jonathan Mangosing, represents a new and exciting generation of hybrid dancer, lean and versatile, and at once classical and street. Mangosing’s versatility allow him to reach audiences across a wide range of forms and genres taking off where Lisa Macuja, the Ballerina of the People, before him left off.

“My favorite thing about being in Smuin Ballet is to be able to play so many different characters, without being pigeon holed… even a surfer on a surf board or a drunkard on the stage.”

Smuin Ballet’s The Christmas Ballet is a San Francisco favorite during the holiday season. The current production showcases Mangosing prominently in the classically flavored first half, then again in a number of crowd pleasing Christmas favorites during the second act. Mangosing’s performance to the song La Virgen, in the voice of Placido Doming projects a powerful portrayal of sorrowful strength.
