MISSION & OBJECTIVE

Third World Indie Film Festival is dedicated to showcasing new and innovative films while fostering the next generation of filmmakers. The festival also seeks to serve the community by presenting unique programs that educate, inspire , engage and challenge a diverse audience through the art of film. The festival provides a platform to introduce their films to the broadest possible audience.

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL

Third world countries, also known as emerging or developing nations, have produced more than half of the world’s films.

Unfortunately, a majority of their filmmakers have stayed relatively unknown as western films continued to dominate the film market. But with perseverance and ingenuity, they are finally beginning to get the recognition they deserve.

Ted Unarce, an award winning filmmaker, created the Third World Indie Film Festival when he saw a lack of representation of groundbreaking and talented filmmakers from third world or developing countries. The festival provides these filmmakers a platform to not only be recognized but also actively participate in a level playing ground with filmmakers from developed nations and bring their work to a global audience.

BRIDGING THE GAP

Given today’s technological advancements, the world has grown smaller. Filmmakers are more attuned now to each other’s works and yet brilliant third world filmmakers are often still overlooked.

The festival, in promoting and celebrating cultural diversity as well as helping elevate the status of third world filmmakers, extends an invitation to filmmakers worldwide to participate in the festival and showcase their unique and original stories of developing or emerging countries. This would help push the envelope of filmmaking by providing their own perspective of third world issues through the various genres of film.

A new age in cinema will rise through films the audience has long waited for: an exhilarating experience of foreign cultures and worlds they have never seen, films that, perhaps, will forever change the industry and society.

All genres of film are accepted by The TWIFF and each will be judged thoroughly by accomplished award winning directors, producers and industry executives. Awards will be distributed among the 11 categories, giving filmmakers the opportunity to be noticed.

TO-BE-SEEN IN THE CITY

“Mas Mas Masaya” sa Milpitas

The Seasons MarketPlace just opened its first Filipino-owned Boxing and Fitness Gym in Milpitas (congratulations, Tony “Roga” Gabucan, proud owner) a couple of weekends ago. In addition, the Third World Indie Film Festival (call for entries are now out) is scheduled to happen in the City of Milpitas this coming September. Also, this Columnist had gathered that TV5, the Philippines’ most exciting network is opening its US offices in Milpitas, soon? Other cities are being considered also like Los Angeles, Serramonte, Daly City, among others, but I think, in my own personal opinion, Milpitas is the best idea, considering it’s being headed by Fil-Am Mayor Joe Estevez. Good luck, Milpitas!

Briefs & Shorts

ERRATUM: Sean Maganito’s last name was inaccurately auto-corrected as Margarito last issue. Correct photo caption should read: “Congratulations & Best Wishes to San Jose’s Theresa Zaragoza and Sean Maganito who are engaged to be married on May 26, 2012.”

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“Music has been good to me. It’s a blessing. I consider my songs like my children – I hone them, watch them grow and then let them go. So, you can’t choose.” – bySinger/Composer Jose Mari Chan when personally asked by this Columnist, which one of his song compositions is his favorite.
