Max Weber (1864 -1920): Plebiscitary Democracy & Liberal Democracy

Abstract- This seminar devoted to shed light on one of the greatest sociologist of Germany during the beginning of twentieth century, namely Max Weber (1864-1920). It does not deals with his life or his major contribution to sociology, but it problematize his concept of “Plebiscitary democracy” and his particular conception of the proper form of Politics and democracy by attempting to answer the following questions: Was Weber gave an affirmative answer to the question of democracy? Is his concept of “Plebiscitary democracy” restrictive one? To what extent can Weber's “Plebiscitary democracy” contribute to the understanding of liberal democracy? Was he a liberal in the modern sense of liberty? Was he an advocate of representative democracy or direct democracy? Was he the godfather of Nazi dictatorship?
