SHOPS AT BIDDEFORD CROSSING

This project is more than twice the size of the nearby «Biddeford Gateway Center» across the street which is anchored by The Home Depot, Kohl's and Applebee's. It started in the mid 2000’s with a plan to bring a multi-store open-air shopping center in Biddeford. The plans proposed a home center, a department store, an office supplies store, a pet store, an electronics store, a home goods retailer and many restaurants.

In March 2006, four restaurants were confirmed: Longhorn Steakhouse, Olive Garden, T.G.I.Friday's and Chili's.

The 520,000-square-foot center initially had 30 stores, including Target, Lowe's, Tjmaxx and Linens’n Things. In June 2006, work was well underway with most buildings taking shape and road improvements being done. Staples announced it would relocate its existing store that was at the Five Point Shopping center. When it opened, this center was impressive and suddenly Biddeford had a large retail center that looked like the Augusta Marketplace.

Maybe it was too much too soon because 2008 turned out to be a tough year for the new center. In May, Linens'n Thing announced it would close 120 stores including the Biddeford location. Then Chili’s closed its doors followed shortly after by TGI Friday’s.

A Kobe Japanese Grill opened in the former Chili's filling a vacant space but Old Navy closed leaving another void. In October 2011 Lowe's abruptly closed 20 U.S. stores including the Biddeford location. In April 2012, Best Buy announced it would close 50 stores including the Biddeford location which has closed on May 12, 2012. Below is a picture of the former Linens'n Things and Old Navy.

In August 2012, news broke that redevelopment of the vacant Lowe's was under review and that the building could be divided in smaller stores including a potential larger store that could be a Market Basket. Market Basket was later confirmed and the 108,000 square foot store opened its doors in August 2013. This was the first Market Basket store in Maine. In 2016, Olive Garden decided to close its Biddeford location.

The center bounced back with the coming of Market Basket. It lated added Michaels and new stores and dining. There is available space today with a 19,748 sq.ft. space to the left of Market Basket, there's the 20,000 sq.ft. former Best Buy and a 15,000 sq.ft. former Old Navy, plus a couple of smaller stores. On November 1st 2019, Olympia Sports announced the closing of 76 stores including the Biddeford location. In 2022, it was revealed that HomeGoods would open in the former Best Buy, next to Tjmaxx.
