SALEM PLAZA

This shopping center opened in 1964. The Demoulas supermarket at the plaza was the sixth of the chain and the first to open in New Hampshire. Grants closed in 1976 and was replaced by Woolco. Woolco closed in 1982 and was replaced by Zayre.  Zayre became Ames in 1989.

A Service Merchandise store was divided in half in 1999 and Bed, Bath & Beyond opened in the new space in 2001. Service Merchandise closed in early 2002. Ames went out of business in 2002 and the store closed in October that year.

A.C.Moore opened in the rest of the former Service Merchandise in Fall 2003. At the same time, a Marshalls Megastore opened in the former Ames. The store was a large Marshalls combined with HomeGoods. Most of the remaining vacant space was in the left corner of the plaza. There was also a closed Osco Drug pharmacy in the middle of the plaza.

The 49,000 sq.-ft. DeMoulas supermarket was the last to bear that name as all others in the company now operated under the Market Basket name. The entire plaza has been renovated when DeMoulas switched to Market Basket. The left part of the plaza has been demolished. The entire plaza facade was rebuilt and a new pylon sign was installed. In April 2023, Bed Bath & Beyond filed for bankruptcy and confirmd it would close all remaining stores, so the Salem location will likely close sometime in 2023.
