CHAMPLAIN CENTRE SOUTH

  • Address:

  • City: Plattsburgh, NY

  • Opening date: 1975

Champlain Centre South started 1975 as the Pyramid Mall Plattsburgh. It featured a free-standing Price Chopper supermarket, Kmart, Montgomery Ward and JCPenney. The mall was not that large and had about 45 stores. It was however the only large indoor mall of the area and attracted many Canadians because of its close proximity of the border.

This changed in 1987 when the mall's parent company built a brand new larger mall nearby: Champlain Centre North. Anchor store JCPenney left to open at the new mall. Other stores also moved out. Yet the mall tried to stay competitive with renovations and the coming of some new stores. In 1992, Kmart expanded their store and it became a Big Kmart in 1997.

Unfortunately the mall suffered after the closure of Plattsburgh Air Force Base in 1995. Less Canadians traveled to the area and Montgomery Ward closed the mall's location in 1997. By the late 90's the mall was virtually empty.

Eventually, the mall was almost entirely demolished and converted to a power center. A new larger Price Chopper was build on the property in 2000. Lowe's opened in 2001 and was later joined by Bed,Bath&Beyond, Petco and Rent-A-Center. The original Kmart store remained in place. In 2018, Kmart closed after Sears Holdings announced a round of store closures.
