Auburndale Plaza was the largest shopping center in Auburn when it opened in 1965. It featured a King's department store, a Shaw's supermarket, two banks, a CVS and other smaller stores. In 1967, Deering Ice Cream opened. In 1969 Owen More opened a store at the plaza.

By 1979, the plaza lost its first position when the Auburn Mall opened. King's went out of business in the 80's leaving a large space vacant. In 1985, Shaw's moved in the larger space vacated by King's and the old Shaw's was redeveloped. In 1993, Red Lobster opened between the plaza and Arby's. That restaurant eventually closed in 1998 and was replaced by The Ninety-Nine, a New England chain.
