SCARBOROUGH GALLERY
Address: Spring Street
City: Scarborough ME
Opening date:
Scarborough Gallery is a $60 million retail project located behind the former Walmart(now Marden's) on Payne Rd, bounded by Spring Street, Mussey Rd. KGI Properties LLC is the the developer of this retail center anchored by Lowe's and Walmart Supercenter.
The old Walmart store on Payne road was the first in Maine when in opened in 1989. While other stores in the state were expanded, renovated or moved, this one became old, used and too small for the Portland market. Land prep started between 2005 and 2006 but there were setbacks. Originally slated for opening in 2007, the center opened piece by piece instead with Lowe’s being the first store.
The new Walmart store eventually opened and is way better than the previous one, and much larger too with 212,000 sf. Lowe's has 165,000 sf. and the total space of the center will be nearly 500,000 square feet of retail space and restaurant pads.
The project could have included the demolition of the old Walmart for more stores. and there were rumors about the coming of a Gander Mountain store at some point. In the end, Marden’s will open in the former Payne Road Walmart building. GameStop, KFC and Taco Bell are now open at the Gallery.
In March 2012, Red Robin Burgers opened. In 2014, Marshalls and HomeGoods relocated from The Shops at Clarks Pond to the Gallery.
