DURGIN SQUARE

This small "L shaped" plaza opened in April 1993 on the corner of Woodbury Avenue and Durgin Lane. For years, the plaza was anchored by Shaw’s, Tjmaxx, Office Max and a few small stores.  Shaw’s originally was located at the struggling Newington Mall.  In July 2005, construction began in the parking lot for a new Ruby Tuesday restaurant which opened in November.  Office Max closed in 2006 and was replaced by A.C.Moore.

Free-standing buildings in front of Durgin Square were then: Ruby Tuesday, GameStop, Boston Market and a Bank. The vacant Circuit City across Durgin Lane became an Ocean State Job lot. Boston Market closed during 2009. A.C.Moore closed in 2010 and in September 2010, HomeGoods was setting up a new store in that space.

Following Petco's footsteps, Sleepy's relocated across the street to the Kmart plaza so that space was vacant as of 2012. Ruby Tuesday apparently closed between 2016 and 2018. In January 2019, Shaw's announced the closing of 4 stores including the Durgin Square Shaw's. In December 2019, plans were filed with the city to establish a new supermarket in the former Shaw's LINK. The store eventually was confirmed as Whole Foods. Ruby Tuesday was recently replaced by a Chase Bank branch.
