CHRISTMAS TREE SHOPS PLAZA

This property was developed several years ago as a Costco Wholesale Club which opened in 1992. The store faced competition from a nearby Bj's Wholesale Club location. In March 1996, Costco announced that it would close the Portsmouth store.

Not long after, Home Depot moved in and opened its first store in the Portsmouth/Newington area. Back then, the region only had a Home Quarters (HQ) store further north. Eventually Home Depot moved to a new larger building located nearby. Below is a picture of the vacant Home Depot (former Costco) where the new shopping has been built.

The shopping center itself opened in 2008 on site of the former Home Depot. The former 128,000 sq.ft. store was demolished and replaced by a 111,800 sf. plaza with a smaller parking lot.

Christmas Tree Shops and Bed, Bath & Beyond opened in the new plaza. A third retailer could join the two stores later but as of 2020 the remaining parcel is still vacant. This site is located alongside the Spaulding Turnpike, at the end of Durgin Lane after passing by the Durgin Square (Shaw's) and PepBoys. It is connected to Gosling Avenue via a small private roadway leading to Motel 6.

In April 2023, Bed Bath & Beyond filed for bankruptcy and confirmed it would close all remaining stores, so the Portsmouth location will likely close sometime in 2023.
