CAPITOL SHOPPING CENTER (Shaw's Plaza)

  • Address: 150 Western Avenue

  • City: Augusta, ME

  • Opening Date: 1966

This shopping center opened in 1966. It was then anchored by Mammoth Mart and a Shaw’s supermarket. King’s eventually replaced Mammoth Mart after they acquired the chain. The store closed in the mid 80’s. Service Merchandise opened in the former Kings.

In the 90’s, the exterior of the plaza was updated with a more modern look. Shaw’s later renovated and expanded their store. The supermarket is now as large as the former King’s. Service Merchandise closed its doors after the company went bankrupt.

In 2002 Applebee's opened in a new building in the parking lot of the plaza. A 20,000 SF. Dollar Tree opened in part of the 52,000 SF. vacant Service Merchandise in 2003. Big Lots opened a store in 2007 in the remaining space available.
