AMES/LOWE'S PLAZA

  • Address: Bath Road

  • City: Brunswick, ME

  • Opening Date: 1985

This shopping center opened in 1985 with one of the last new Zayre store built in the state before Zayre was acquired by Ames. The plaza was built on site of a former Drive-In Theater. For some reason, the shopping center looked half-built for ever with plenty of space to expand. There was enough space to extend the existing wing of small stores and add a large store or supermarket as shown below.

Zayre became Ames after the acquisition in 1989-90. As one point, Walmart opened a store right across Ames adding strong competition. The chain went out of business and the store closed in October 2002.

A new project was announced for the site: Lowe's proposed to tear down the former Ames store to build a 165,000 square-foot store. The existing Ames plaza was 103,500 sq.ft. The lone remaining store at the plaza, Jo-Ann fabrics, left the plaza and relocated at the Topsham Fair mall. Today, the site of the former Ames plaza is home to Lowe’s. Walmart and Lowe's can be accessed through the same road so although they're apart, they're essentially part of the same retail complex in a way.
