Mill Creek plaza was build in the 70's and was originally anchored by Giant Department store. Giant collapsed in 1973 and was replaced by King's Department store. King's lasted for about ten years and closed in 1983.  In 1984, Mars Department stores opened in the former King's. Mars lasted until 1989. Shaw's supermarket renovated the building and moved in October 1990. The plaza is today also known as Shaw's Mill Creek Plaza and features the commonly used Shaw's Plaza pylon sign seen elsewhere in New England.
