MALL AT FOX RUN (FOX RUN MALL)

Fox Run Mall opened in 1983 right by the existing Newington Mall which had opened 10 years earlier. Back then, the mall was anchored by Sears, Filene's, JCPenney and Jordan Marsh. The mall proved to be a big competitor to its neighboor which started to struggle in the late 80's and earlu 90's. Over the years, several smaller stores relocated to the newer Fox Run Mall and Newington Mall started to loose its appeal.

The nearby Pease Air Force Base closed officially in March 1991 adding to the economic struggle of that period. Newington Mall lost Shaw's, smaller stores and later anchor store Porteous in 1992. In July 1994, owners of the Fox Run Mall acquired Newington Mall. which was eventually converted into a big-box open-air shopping center.

Meanwhile, Jordan Marsh stores merged with Macy's East in 1994 and stores were converted into Macy's stores in 1996. Not much changed at Fox Run Mall until another merger happened in 2005-2006, this time with Federated Department Stores and May Company. The result was that several Filene's department stores were converted into Macy's stores. For Run Mall's Filene's was converted into a Macy's Men and Home store and the exiting Macy's was now only women. Below is the former Filene's.

On October 15th, 2018, Sears filed for Chapter 11 and announced the closure of 142  stores (79 Sears) including Newington's Sears location. As of late December 2018, the store closing sale is well under way with several parts of the store already empty. The store should closed for good mid-January 2019. On November 1st 2019, Olympia Sports announced the closing of 76 stores including the Fox Run Mall location. In November 2022, the former 127,000 sq.ft. Sears property was sold for $11.5 million.  In 2023, Torrington Properties eventually purchased the mall itself and had already acquired the adjacent Newington Park shopping center in 2021.
